The Start of Something New

Or perhaps a better way to classify this is "A new way of doing an old thing"

 I'm getting ready to take a new look at surfing and SUP. I'll keep this mysterious for now...

After Work Surfing

I'm trying to get more active, eat better and lose some weight. The easiest part of that is to just go surfing more. Acting on that, I decided I should be surfing at least three times a week - once or twice on the weekends and Wednesday or Friday after work seems to be the best times to get a few waves.

 

 I went out yesterday evening after work - lots of fun (with the benefits of an hour of paddling). I don't know why I don't do this more often (yes I do - check my other blog out - plants).

I paddled out this morning to get some exercise in and the low tide was pretty low.

 

Marlon was sick and Noe was cooking so I went solo.

New Fishing Spot on Saturday

We checked out another spot on Saturday. The wind was blowing into us - I should have brought either the 10' St Croix Triumph Surf rod or the 13' Nitro. I think either of those would have given my cast just a little more distance. Lots of cool tide pool life and cowry shells.

 

The fishing was ok - at least I didn't get skunked. Our friends actually got a fish on my bucket list - nice kagami!!!

 

Lastly, I found a clump of ogo among all these other seaweeds - I harvested it to make some poke.

Hokulea is Home

While we were at Pearl Harbor for the regatta, the Hokulea arrived at Magic Island after a three year voyage around the planet (I didn't take this picture - I pulled it down from the internet).

 

While we were waiting for Noe to finish a flute practice, Marlon and I went to the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor to check out the Hokulea berthed across.

 

It was easier than going to Magic Island and trying to get closer with tens of thousands of people trying to do the same thing. And it is always fun to checkout the other boats in the harbor (like this one - big cat!)

We woke up early this past Saturday to help setup for the Pearl Harbor Yacht Club HYSA Regatta. Putting up a tent, I had flashbacks of field exercises...

 

The kids from all the clubs had a great time -

 

But it was these two that dominated!!! First and second place finishes!!!

 

Fishing While the Kids were Racing

While the kids were racing El Toro sailboats on Saturday, I went fishing (they were too far from shore for us to see who was who anyways). Spinning setup (TFO Mangrove, Shimano FJ Stradic) throwing ika strips, I ended up catching three - two papio and a roi.

 

 I lost a Hammer Bomb slow sinking 0.75 ounce weight (cut off on the reef by something that was stripping line) and then a whole setup with a 1/12 ounce silver kastmaster (cut off by a barracuda) - lots of fun!!!
