Surf Report 9/17/2014 Part 3

There were a few sizable sets that came through - 6' faces, but for the most part this swell was about waist to shoulder high.

I had the ULI GLX2 9'0" inflated to 18 psi (I think I really like it up at 20, but I'm not sure if that is a safe pressure to maintain it at...).

And my tongue was out... that means I was either hungry or it was a great day of surfing!!!

Surf Report 9/17/2014 Part 2

I told the kids they "lived reason number three that homeschooling is awesome... schedule flexibility!!!!" Noe is stuck to the surf mat.

Noe is more of a "go with the flow" surfer - nothing wrong with that, we all have our own motivators. Here's Noe going with the flow! ;)

Surf Report 9/17/2014 Part 1

Marlon got his turns down today! The swell from Hurricane Edouard came in today. Not as big as I was hoping, but it wasn't flat so hurrah to the surf!!!!

The kids actually caught way more waves than I did - hawking the peak doesn't always pay... They dominated the inside!

I had the gopro still attached to my SUP paddle so I was able to get some higher angled shots. I think they definitely add depth to the picture. GO MARLON!!!!

Walked the beach this morning casting for some whiting, but they weren't there. I thought I had arrived with the incoming High tide, but alas I was wrong and I suffered in lack of fish participants in tug-o-war.

I shifted gears and started chucking a jig and caught this Needlefish. This guy was so pissed it wanted blood - even it's own (it's biting it's tail).

I had several others hit the jig, but they usually don't get hooked because their jaws are so narrow and bony. Oh well - at least I didn't get skunked!!! The surf is supposed to pick up tomorrow....

Fishing Report 9/15/2014

Caught three new (to us) species today. Pinfish

Sergeant Major - this was a significant event for us as we have spotted these fish but not been able to catch one for the entire duration that we have been fishing at the jetties. BAM!!!

Juvenile Grouper - really small guy. He's got big shoes to fill as the King of the Reef. I wasn't expecting this at all (I thought it was another black sea bass).

We also caught a bunch of the blennies and Marlon caught something that looked like a juvenile Pompano - but it came off the hook as he almost got it to hand.

Lastly - the mullet are starting to stack up for their annual run. The river is getting thick with them and I even saw a bunch of splashing going on as a predator fish (likely a Jack Crevalle) was taking shots at various schools. La took a walk on the beach and reported the birds were diving in pretty close to shore - I'm going to have some fun very shortly (on the fly and on topwater poppers) - oh boy!!!!

Surf Report 9/14/2014

Same surf as yesterday (too small for my fat ass, but perfect for the others in my awesome family). La brought out the 4th Gear Flyer today - and everyone took turns having a blast on it. I've said it before and I'll say it again - it's the best board I've ever owned!!!

Fishing Report 9/14/2014

We ran errands in the morning and hit the beach in the mid afternoon. I brought the St Croix Surf Rod out and used up nearly the last of the Fish Bites (in Orange/Clam) bait. I caught this whiting on the first cast.

Then I had a dry spell until I caught this Bonnet Head Shark. This guy didn't offer much of a fight, but it did give the kids a great opportunity to see what a bonnet head is like.

We all got to see it swim back to the sea unharmed (save the harassing the kids gave it before I told them to respect all life and to not torment it).
