Patagonia Haleiwa Board Swap

I got an email from the Patagonia Shop up in Haleiwa. They held a Board Swap similar to what the shop down in Kakaako holds. This one didn't have the foot traffic that the other shop's swaps have had in the past. There was some bigger surf in the ocean probably drawing away anyone who would be looking for boards. I brought a couple of boards we have not been using just to see if there was any interest - nope. One thing that Marlon noticed that was different was the addition of several wind sculptures - the gallery at the corner on Kam Hwy has them all over! Nice addition (but I wonder if they bring them in every night so people don't steal them...). Lastly (no pictures though), Marlon and I hit White Plains to end the long streak of not surfing - felt really good to get back into the water. I definitely need to surf more (for more fun and to whittle away my extra chunk)!

Dissecting Squid

While I was helping kids put circuits together, my kids were cutting up a squid to look at the internals. I wonder if the instructors went fishing afterwards... this must have been a lot of bait and the kids already cleaned out the guts. At the next stop, Noe built a parachute (like some many before this one). Awesome fun and learning at the Lacy Veach Day of Discovery!!! Big Mahalo to all the volunteers - if the work and resources I put into it is any indication of what it takes - this was a mountain moved for sure!

Lacy Veach Day of Discovery

I volunteered to help out with a circuits workshop at the Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery. This event is held at the Punahou campus because Lacy Veach was a graduate of the school. After the workshop (we held two sessions), I got to walk around spent some time at the Polynesian Voyaging Society display. I had a long conversation with one of the PVS volunteers - I asked how the Navigation Circle worked. Prior to this conversation, I wasn't sure how the circle worked - was it stationary, or did it rotate with the vessel? How did the iwa in the middle work? Well... I think it was truly fitting that I became educated on this central Polynesian Navigating tool at the Lacy Veach Day of Discovery! Although I didn't get to see everything (I missed the drones), I did get to see some fish (both dead and alive). Nice event! I'm glad I volunteered to help! Oh - one more thing - Noe dissected a squid - I'll post pictures when I down load those.

Fish and Dive Expo 2016

Right after the Punahou, we stopped off at the 2016 Fish and Dive Expo!!!! I actually didn't buy anything - can you believe that??? Maybe it's because we're on a budget and I'm trying to stick to it ;) What we did see closely resembled many of the other expos we've been to earlier this year (Hawaii Ocean Expo, lots of the science days, etc) - good to see many of the same vendors, but it'd also be nice to see some new and different things, or vendors from the other islands. Windward Boats had several boats at the show - nice day boats for hitting the sand bar or dragging some inshore lures. But the fishing kayaks and the New reversible Mirage Drive propulsion systems took the cake. I've seen these air bags advertised on Facebook alot - Some nice gyotaku at the show!

Weta Sailing Once Again

Our local MWR has two Wetas in their rental fleet. I finally got of my butt to get checked out to sail the boat. Actually my bum hip has been acting up again and that's why I haven't been anxious to get back in the cockpit. La had set up a family day at the Marina through Pearl Harbor Yacht Club to get more people interested in racing in the HYSA events. With us being there already, I figured I should at least get this done. Now on a weekend with some spare time, I can take the family out on a fast boat! I miss sailing our Weta - but with our life over the past few years, there was no way we could have kept it. Having this option is a wonderful thing!
