First Fishing Outting

Marlon asked to go fishing on his Birthday - so fishing we went!  We used ika strips for bait, but I actually had more action on lures.  I saw a kaku swim up to a small brown Mark White ceramic lure I was using and cut the main line.  Then I got this guy -

Nice sized omilu papio - not a bad first fish of the year!  This guy hit a 1/12th ounce kastmaster - silver with a blue stripe.

Marlon also hooked up with an omilu.  He got his fish on an ika strip.

It is really nice to go fishing and not go home skunked.  Multiple that by 10 for a first trip of the year!

Fishing with Noe Again

Marlon was still on his trip to Molokai on July 4th, so I brought Noe out to try and catch some oama that we had seen on the previous fishing trip. The oama were not there...

We found a beached sea urchin (hawa'e)

And I cast out a kastmaster hoping to hook up with something (besides seaweed). Skunked again - OH WELL - that's why it's called fishing...

Slowly Getting Back into the Swing...

Through different means, I have slowly been getting back into fishing. There was the obvious, last weekend when I took Marlon out - but here are a couple more. I had a business lunch recently and instead of talking golf, the customer and I got to talk fishing and the bane of all lures - the kaku (barracuda). I said I'd dress up a couple of kastmasters with a bite tippet. Well - here they are... Then La came home from volunteering at Laniakea Beach to keep the general public and tourists back away from the green turtles sunning on the beach - and at some point looked down and found these flies - Heck yeah I'll fish those! And then today I actually got off my butt and picked up the flyrod again! I did have eyes on about five oio, but they were never lined up (but that's pretty much what flyfishing is all about ain't it...)

Friday Catching with the Kastmaster

I hit the water after work on Friday. I started out whipping curly tails, but eventually switched out to a 1/4 ounce gold kastmaster. That's when the catching started. This barracuda was a lucky prize - considering I didn't have a bite tippet on the line. Usually they hit the lure and if they get it mostly in their mouth, 'ping' - bye-bye lure. A few casts later I brought this papio to hand. Just a hair under legal, so back to the drink to get bigger. It's funny how Friday afternoons have become the times I've caught the most (without bait that is).

Gotcha!!! Four to Hand!!!

Instead of doing laundry right after work, I decided to see if anybody wanted to play tug-o-war. I set out with a really pink bucktail jig with ambitions to put a hook in the lip of a decent bonefish. I got to the gravel grounds (where these jigs get caught in crevices in limestone) and switched to a 3/8 ounce brass kastmaster - and the catching began! I ended up catching four of these papio. I lost another (that was bigger - actually pulled against the drag) because a smallish spotted eagle ray caught me off guard (I saw it before it plowed into my leg - and at that point the papio took advantage of the slack I gave it and wah-wah-wah....). Nice way to start off the weekend! Oh - and I did my laundry after I finished fishing - man can I prioritize!!!
