I have rediscovered kiting! Second time back out (after a long hiatus) and it doesn't quite feel like it is brand new again, but I haven't quite thrown caution to the wind either -
I also haven't found my gopro mount for the kite, so I only have these pictures of the before and after.
The wind was good for most of the session. It did die once and my kite just fell out of the sky, but at the end I didn't feel like my arms had gotten ripped off. Good day (with more to follow)!!!

Kiting Again
Oh yes it has been awhile - but I finally broke the dry spell. I pressure tested both the 16 and the 11 Crossbows and there were no issues.
The next day, I got a call from a friend and we headed over to Kailua. I put the 11 up and used the twintip. The wind was just a hair too strong, but I depowered the kite and stayed out for a couple of hours.
Back when we lived in Gulfport, MS I was actually kiting a fair bit. The kids were much younger and they always took shelter from the wind under the kites - as soon as I had these pumped up - that's where they went.

I truly missed kiting - this is something I'm going to have to remedy although living in Ewa Beach makes any kite outing a good haul (Kailua or Mokuleia...). I'm also gonna get my directional ready.

Procrastinating Part 1
In a deliberate effort to not "work" today (even though I have enough to keep me busy 36 hours a day, 10 days a week), I went kiting this morning.
Here are some of the many faces of kiting - the "I have water in my eyes" look, the "oh boy" look and the dreaded "uh oh" look.

Sunday Kiting Session
The wind was pretty steady and stiff today.
CF137x41 and the Cabrinha 11m Xbow - equipment perfection!
I got some crazy jumps in, but I actually went way inside of where I normally track - the windsurfers went South today to do a long downwinder - I went where they normally go so I can ride the swell.
No peeling breakers, but I'll take what I can get - even discontiguous wind swell.
I think it is awesome crosstraining when you have to surf fakie (more like switch snowboarding) - my outbound tack did this today (right foot forward for me). I could feel muscles being used in ways they normally aren't.
Fun session!
Now if I can translate these 'S' turns and body positioning to my windsurfing...

Saturday Run, Part 2
Went kiting a second time - got tons of jumps, not small ones either - big air all around.
I have way too many pictures this time around...
I tried to pick ones that showed the different colors of the lagoon.
The camera angle is good too - I am using the GoPro clamp located at the depower/power adjusters. My favorite move out here is getting big air and throwing a board twist at the apex of the jump. It's hard to do a full on table top because of the chicken loop - but I'll keep trying. I will be working to get more comfortable jumping on my weak side too (I'm a regular foot).
If I hadn't already said it - this place is paradise for kiting!
Awesome day!!!

Saturday Run, Part 1
Today isn't turning out the way I thought it would, but it is still fun -
I was hoping to kite around 0800, but it was raining pretty solidly.
I did get to kite - pretty gusty conditions. I used the Raptor (twin tip) - really a random thought but glad I did. When I got there it was super low tide - inches of water (check out the pictures) - the Raptor TORE IT UP!
I tried to stay on the inside for most of this run - with the gusty winds and no leash, I felt I should play it safe. I did venture out a couple of times and even lost the board for a second - I just dumped the power in the kite and got the board without any drama.
Lots of high jumps - definitely got some adrenaline pumping!
I landed the kite (just in time - as a squall pushed in about 5 minutes after I landed) and went home thinking I was going to get a dive in - nope - work issue.
Max Speed 22.4 mph; Total distance 13.07 miles covered in 1 hour 13 minutes (yes I had the GPS on me).
Now that that's done, I think I'll put the kite up again. See you in a bit!

FINALLY!!!!
The wind and my timing converged today -
Usually I see the wind from my office window, and I have to keep on working. Or - I'm not working and the wind is not up. This problem was compounded by the fact I had a 2011 Cabrihna 16m^2 Crossbow, a 2011 CrazyFly Raptor and a recently finished lightwind kiteboard all sitting in the garage staring at me and planting images of perfect conditions and me ripping the heck out of the water with these tools...
Ahhh to go to me happy place...
No need to daydream today - right at 1300 the wind jumped from 8 mph to 11 mph and with that, La launched me and with barely a whitecap in the water (see the picture with the board I made in use - smooth water) I was cruising! The big Crossbow was incredible!!!!
I rotated out the boards and the CrazyFly Raptor was also a winner! The combination of the Raptor, the Crossbow and the wind (by that time 13-16 mph) made for some wicked high jumps - nothing crazy - 12' vertical with 20' across ground.
We stayed most of the day at the beach - I haven't been this sunburnt or this sore for months!!!!
And I can't wipe the smile off my face - it's good to be stoked again!

New Kiteboard

The following excuses were the primary reasons I quoted to La as I rationalized the need to get a twin tip kiteboard:
"With the extreme low tides we've been having here recently, I need a board that doesn't draw a draft"
"It can be my birthday, Christmas and Anniversary gift all wrapped up into two (I used this for the kite as well)"
"I've got a lock on a great package deal (which I did - 15% off on current cutting edge equipment - in reality only a couple of hundred more than the sale price will be next October/November when this kite and board go on clearance)"
"If I get the next duty station I think I'm going to get, I'm going to need a new set of kites (this is another topic for another post)"
"You can learn on this board too"
"Carbon fiber is sooooooo sexy looking and I just can't help but looooook"
"It's a great board for boosting huge air"
"I need to mix up my riding and this board will help me do that"
"Did I mention it is laid up with carbon fiber???"
Well - for all the excuses, La let me get it and here it is all bolted together - the Crazyfly 137x41 Raptor Pro!!!
Now we just need some wind....

New Engine, but "No Touchy"

After my many innuendos and hours on the internet, my A-W-E-S-O-M-E wife let me get a brand new kite (and board)!!!
No - not last year's model on sale....
No - not a second hand kite at a bargain price...
But an honest to goodness, current leading edge technology wing!!!
I was able to find a great deal on "this" (if you can't read the picture, the labels from top to bottom read:
2011 Cabrinha Crossbow, 16 m, Color 007 (Green, White, Orange)
2011 IDS with Recoil
Pump (and where I may be going next, I will need a spare pump - more on that in future posts as this develops - but for now, try an imagine the furthest place from Gulfport, MS and we see if you guessed right...).
The other purchase was a 2011 Crazyfly Raptor Pro - 137 cm of svelt carbon fiber sexiness that will "slash and burn" the poor water that gets in my way - that same poor water that will be hydrophilicly draw to it's oh so smooth layup... Oh the senseless destruction that will be occurring!!!! Is there no justice in this body of water???? Will no one help those poor, defenseless water molecules? No one?
I didn't think so...
You don't wanna mess with THIS!!!! I thought so...
(Right now you are probably thinking - "Has he lost his mind??? Is this a stream of consciousness that bleed out on the keyboard?" - well, read on and you'll quickly ascertain the reason for my "madness".....)
You may be wondering why there are no pictures of my new tools. That's easy. La got to the UPS man before I did. Actually, he avoided me even though I was engaging him in conversation.
La is a very pretty lady, so it's easy to understand why he'd want to talk to her instead of me (I am not a pretty woman) - but unfortunately, her charm got the kite and board into her hands first and quickly into Christmas wrapping paper.
Oh well - how can I complain??? This is a significant first (a current year kite and board) and I CAN WAIT for Christmas!!!
:)
