First Fishing Outting

Marlon asked to go fishing on his Birthday - so fishing we went!  We used ika strips for bait, but I actually had more action on lures.  I saw a kaku swim up to a small brown Mark White ceramic lure I was using and cut the main line.  Then I got this guy -

Nice sized omilu papio - not a bad first fish of the year!  This guy hit a 1/12th ounce kastmaster - silver with a blue stripe.

Marlon also hooked up with an omilu.  He got his fish on an ika strip.

It is really nice to go fishing and not go home skunked.  Multiple that by 10 for a first trip of the year!

Second Fishing Outting of the Year

Marlon has been asking to go fishing for a couple of weeks now, so I figured I'd oblige.  We hit the channel this morning on the low tide and pitched ika strips.  There was no wind so it would have been really hard to flyfish for oio today.

We saw this crab on the way out.

And after seeing a bunch of fish tail our hooks with no takers, I finally got one to play tug.  Clean hook up in the corner of the mouth (easy to remove the hook and minimizes damage).  Nice moana!

I actually lost a bunch of tackle to snags.

Nice way to spend the morning!  It's hard to believe this is only our second time out fishing this year (foiling has officially taken over the free time).   Marlon took all the pictures today.

First Fishing Trip of 2019

Marlon has been asking to go fishing again - so on Saturday afternoon while Noe was on a Laser racing, I figured I could take him to the flats.

Marlon had a bunch of follows but no takers.  I ended up with a nice papio (which I let go since it was the first fish of the year - and really these fish could use all the help they can get with all the pressures they have on them) and a nice kaku

Nice start to the fishing year!

Mokuleia on Labor Day

We spent the afternoon up at a friend of a friend's house at Mokuleia/Waialua.

Uhhhh - anybody see any oama around here???

La brought one of the hammocks we got (in anticipation of building a gazebo in the back yard) - it is awesome!!!  I took a solid nap in it after booting the kids out of it.

Fun time!

Lone Papio

Marlon and I opted to go fishing this morning.  I got one to take the bait -

I had a few other follows - a kaku chasing the bubble float, another unidentified - but no other takers.  Still nice to walk the flats and see the sights!

Fishing with Bong Again

My friend Bong is leaving the island so I offered to take him fishing again.  We hit Kaimalino, but the wind and waves were up a little more than I had thought they would be.

Opihi

Hauukeuke

We packed up and went to the pier at the Marine Base.

Until we fish again Bong!!!

Fishing - Saturday June 16th, 2018

Went fishing for a bit while the kids were at their regatta.  The summer tides are in full swing - super low in the morning and super high in the evenings.  How's this for super low???

Caught five papio - one on the first cast and another notable one that pulled drag (I love that sound).

This was the dragster!!!  Legal size to eat - but I released it to get bigger and have a bunch of babies.

Awesome time (especially since I caught fish!!! No skunk today!!!)

Cool Poster 1

I was at the Hawaii State Library and I saw a few posters in the Hawaiiana section.  I'll poster them separately with different labels (so I can find them easier in the future).

I've seen this L50 poster around for years, but I also think it's been out of print for about the same length of time.  This shows the size of a fish when it is able to reproduce.

First Fishing in Awhile

The weekend is here - Marlon and I checked the tides and the surf report - then decided it was probably best to go fishing.  We were at the flats with spinning gear just a little bit after dawn.

I was using the TFO Mangrove rod that I recently rewrapped - everything is back to normal with this rod!

And after a long period of seeing fish (lai, kaku, and others) either just following the bait, or even stealing rigging (the kaku), I finally got one to take and fight!

Small is better than none!!!  This guy was released to fight again another day (when he gets bigger).  Fun day!

Re-Guiding the Second Rod

After finishing the TFO Mangrove (and it's been a couple of weeks as of this writing - I'm behind a week) - I got to work on fixing the Nitro Graphite 13'.

This one went pretty quick (after all the practice with the TFO).

Re-eyed Rod

The last post I made on going fishing with the kids had a note about my favorite spinning rod losing the rings in a couple of the eyes.  Well, its been several weeks but I finally got the motivation to redo all the eyes on this rod.  I decided to redo all of them since these were the second and third rings to pop out.

I paid a visit to Brian's Fishing Supply and bought a full set of titanium ringed guides.  Hopefully these will holdup for a while.

I spent the last few nights removing the old guides and wrapping the new ones on one by one, and I put the epoxy on last night.

And since I'm on a roll, I'm going to do the same for the 13' Nitro, and redo a few of the wraps on the Epic Fiberglass Fly Rods I put together.
