I took Marlon and Noe out this morning as the solunar table indicated it would be an active fishing day. We saw lots of fish - barracuda, surgeonfish, oama, nehu, papio and others - but Marlon was using flies and I was using a kastmaster and grubs - so in a word we got "skunked".
But it was a great morning to be out on the water and Marlon was trying out the flyrod I recently got for him -
Fun morning (even if w didn't catch any fish)!!!

Fishing Report 6/8/2014, Part 4
We finished up at the dock where Marlon wanted to start.
You can tell when Marlon gets tired/hot - he broke out the secret technique he and Noe perfected two years ago - handlining.
There was a bug fuss in the community last fall centered on getting rid of the lily pads. They are definitely pared back this year, but I think to the enjoyment of some residents, there are still some lily pads around.
Fun day fishing!!! Thanks Marlon!

Whacking
Marlon and I had some bad allergies this weekend - I had really puffy eyes and even a little bit of a hard time breathing due to a pollen explosion. One of the bad sides to this time of year - getting whacked proper by plant sperm... Well, late Sunday afternoon, we had recovered a bit and Marlon put a whacking to some of the Lake Newport Bluegill - WHACK!

Way to go Marlon!!!

Crappie Hole Bingo
It was nice and warm on Thursday afternoon. Marlon asked to go fishing so off we went. He ended up using small popper we made back in the winter and got some decent hits from a few largemouth bass and a bruiser of a bluegill. I wasn't doing so well at this spot so I told Marlon I was headed to the dam.

The buttercups were is full bloom - nice diversion from casting.

At the dam, it took a few fanning casts to find my groove but when I did... BAM!!!! I was catching a different crappie nearly every cast for about a good 15 minutes straight. This largemouth got a bit jealous of all the action and took a turn at the tug'o war line. To ensure I am rotating the stock sufficiently, I am making sure to use a different rod each time I head out - this should also help me get my casting dialed in. Switching up the rods, lines and leader length will force me to adapt my stroke. On Thursday, I was using the Scott F2 6533 - it didn't take long for me to remember I really like casting this rod (and I think I will be repeating that statement with each change of rod). I lined up the rod with a RIO Gold WF3. The drill became cast a ostrich herl bead chain nymph out parallel to the dam rocks, strip in slow, watch for the slab flash, gently set the hook and bring in a feisty crappie. AWESOME fishing day!

Even More Fishing
Noe had a playdate today so Marlon quickly asked to go flyfishing at the Lake - TWIST MY ARM!!! I brought out a different rod - the Axisco Airrite Feelex 7'0" 4 piece 3wt. I LOVE THIS ROD!!!! I lined it up with a RIO Perception 3wt and it was casting bliss! Wrestling medium sized bluegill was a blast! And the bigger males were bending the rod into the butt section!!! Marlon caught a couple and is getting his casts further out. The fish are starting to look up - Marlon and I both ended up using poppers and gots some great takes!!!

Saturday Fishing at Lake Newport
Catch up posts. Marlon and I swung the flyrods on Saturday afternoon. I was using the Ijuin Yomogi 3wt with a DT3 SA Supra, and he was armed with an Eagle Claw 6'6" 4/5wt lined with a 5wt SA GPX. He caught a Bluegill and a decent sized Large Mouth on his own accord - no help from me whatsoever!!! I was probably more excited than he was!!! As you can see, I caught some bushes and Noe made sure to photo document that. I really like the Yomogi. As soft as it is, it is 100% character. Plus it makes a small fish seem like a leviathan (as I have said many times before). I can get the line out, but there was enough wind on Saturday that it took a lot of finesse.

Marlon and I ended up catching the same bluegill three times over. We knew it was the same one because it was pretty beat up - the bluegill apparently start kicking the crap out of each other this time of year to see which of them gets to make a nest in the 'cool dude' area. It is springtime and love is in the air (and in the lake).
