Some Late Posts - Hawking

The next few posts are going to be catch ups.

Marlon and I had a tiny bit of spare time Thursday after I picked him up from class.  We made a quick trip up to Wahiawa to check out the Town and Country Surfboard Factory.

I really took a fancy to the asymmetric boards and the retro twins that Glenn Pang shapes.

In fact, we saw the twins down in the shops also (and they looked just as svelte... ooooohhhhhhh so nice...

The twin (The Saint model) T&C at Pearlridge.  I feel the need to mow some foam coming on soon...

Anniversary Breakfast with Bonzers!

La and I celebrated our 17th Wedding Anniversary last weekend - we went to breakfast at her favorite breakfast place - Cafe Haleiwa.  The Campbell Brothers were present and running around, and they had a collection of bonzers on the rack next to our table.  How nice that we got seated where we could eat great food and admire some really great surfboards!!!

Awesome breakfast burrito!!!

Christmas Day 2015

There are funny stories linked to the gifts we got the kids - but you'll have to stop by and have a beer to get them ;) The kids love their outdoor exploration equipment! Marlon did a great job waxing up the board. We took it out for a spin and he was fearless!!! The conditions were tough - super strong trades and a weak swell. I had to jump on the SUP to catch anything.

Alaia and Duke's

The alaia looks small - maybe ridden paipo style?

The "don't touch" sign on Duke's board was small and at the bottom of the display. Not much of a deterrent if you ask me (No I didn't touch it - I know what our acidic finger prints can do to artifacts over time - I have too much respect for what this board and it's owner have done for surfing to merely 'touch' it for my own selfish indulgence).

Oh how the gears in my mind are turning...

Lazy Sunday

Bishop Museum has free admission on the first Sunday of every month.

That just happened to be the day I arrived on Oahu (again).

A perfect way to spend a few hours before checking in to the hotel.

Some really cool things on display -

The spooky "poison god"...

He'e (tako) lures...

And they had Duke's favorite surfboard!

I'll post some more cool ones -

An oldie, but greatie

I had this board hanging from my bedroom wall and either the drywall anchor gave way or an earthquake shook the rack loose. The back half of the board fell to the floor first. Dinged the trailing fin and a part of the port rail. Easily fixed.

This Gerry Lopez Mako model is now my oldest board. Got it at a now defunct shop in Haleiwa back in 1998. Since early last year I've been culling the school down to make room for new boards, but this one will always have a special place in my collection. I guess in my older age I'm getting less nostalgic (you wouldn't believe how many I've let go).

6'8" with a gem of a paint job. This board has taken me to places most will never see or understand (think 8' Lani's on a perfect afternoon session - completely makable takeoffs with barreling follow through on the right).

My Garage

I can't find the charger for my camera - so I don't have any new pictures. My other excuse is that I've been sick from the flu mist and swamped at work - "many violins playing".

Ok - with the excuses out of the way, this post centers around the rack in my garage.

You've seen this rack in the background of other posts. You scratched your head wondering "does he really have that many boards?". And you've marveled that each board in it's own right has something to admire (I do that ALL THE TIME!). Well, there are more boards that aren't on this storage rack, but these are the current workhorses and all the peripherals. Windsurfers, kiteboards, longboards and standup paddleboards. Fishing poles, sunhats, masts, booms, leashes and spare fins. I don't control much space in the house, but there is no question that the garage is mine!!!

A-LO-HA!!!

6'5" Quad

Welcome back -

Here is one of the other projects - a 6'5" quad a la Apocolypse Now (LtCol Kilgore did it - why can't I??? - slapping on unit identification, name, etc - it'll all make sense in a couple of weeks after this board is finished - trust me). For now here's one picture of me shaping it in the backyard and another of Noe and I checking out the rails!

Tomorrow I'm going to Cerritos College (80 miles SE from Oxnard) to see Greg Loeher vacuum laminate composites onto a shaped blank WITHOUT a rocker bed - a mystery that has eluded me for quite sometime will now be REVEALED!!!! All for the low price of a tank of gas in the motorcycle and a $25 entry fee!!!! Pictures tomorrow!
