Garage Works - 3/25/2024

I worked on No.35 this afternoon.  I started out by sanding the laps and routing out the slot for the SUP handle.

I used Gorilla Glue to get the handle set in place.

I taped up the handle slot and then placed the innegra layer.

Innegra layer up close.

I placed the carbon patch over the area where the rider's knees and feet will go and then draped over the nose to tail sheet.  I got the relief cuts made and got the epoxy mixed.  First pour was 16.5 resin + 6.6 ounces of hardener.  I needed a second pour and used 5.0 resin and 2.0 ounces of hardener.

And here it is all laminated up!

I'll sand the bottom laps and get the transome fill coat on.  Matt wants a pigmented fill coat on the top and bottom, so that will go on after the transome clear fill.  After the first fill sanding, I'll then laminate a carbon strip on the bottom that will double as a racing stripe.  That will need another laminate coat, followed by two fill coats.

And before the final fill coats I'll need to get the labels and the stickers he wants put on.  Definitely a few extra steps on this one.

With the wind coming up, it may be next week before this one is finished.

Garage Works - 11/25/2023

La was working on stuff so I had an opportunity to work on No.33

I cut the slot for the SUP handle - I am putting this on the top deck because carrying the board with a foil and the Foil Drive attached will be easier holding the handle and the mast (vice holding the handle and leaning the board on my hip like a wingboard).

I glued the handle in with Gorilla Glue.

Some of the tools I used today.

And I even had enough time to measure and cut out the slots for the mast track.

These are in perfect position!  Measuring multiple times and cutting once -

I'll try and get these epoxied into place tomorrow morning.  The wind is coming in stronger tomorrow - I'm going to skip the dawn patrol and wing mid-morning.  That'll give me enough time to get the boxes set.

Next up after that - laminating.  I'm actually still debating what the laminate will be... all carbon, carbon bottom and fiberglass top, innegra somewhere... decisions, decisions, decisions.

Garage Works - 8/6/2023

Marlon and I ran errands today.  At one point we ended up at HIC Kailua.  They had a 75 liter wing board for $550 - I was tempted, but then remembered I don't have any room in the garage and I still have a cool board to laminate.  I'll save the $550 for something else (probably an Axis Spitfire).

We came home and having been inspired by the temptation at HIC, I set to work with new determination to finish No.32 - I epoxied the SUP handle in place and looked at the orientation of the mast track boxes.

Tomorrow night I'll cut out the box slots and epoxy those down.

I also closed up several of the open dings on Ken's longboard and added more foam to the finbox void.  This thing really should be put out to pasture...

Since I'm cutting the finbox on No.32, I'll do the same on this board tomorrow.

Garage Works - 8/23/2021

It was raining on and off yesterday - so I didn't bother with thinking about going to the beach.  Instead, I routed out the slots for the foil track boxes and the bottom deck handle on Kalani's board.

Now the board is ready for glassing.  I'll try and get that done this week/weekend.

Bottom Deck Handle Glued In

I got the bottom deck handle glued in last night.  I used White Foaming Gorilla Glue since this will not be load bearing (foil loads that is).

The foam did a good job of filling the surrounding void.  I should have epoxied in the mast tracks (but I went winging instead - next post).

Bottom Inserts on the NWFB

After I mowed the lawn and helped La learn some carpentry, I felt compelled to get some more progress done on the Narrow Wing Foiling Board.

Measure - measure - measure - cut.

Actually came out perfect!

And I went ahead and cut out the bottom deck handle.

If the predicted south swell does not show up tomorrow, I can get these inserts epoxied in and laminate the bottom deck fabrics.

After that, I'll have to turn the board over, figure out where I'll place the footstrap inserts and route out the holes for the divynicell blocks.  Lots of work still to follow - but this is always the most critical step (so it's all downhill from here).
