Another Shop Carrying Foils

Post from this weekend.  I took the kids to check out some surf shops on the Windward side.  We hit Hawaiian Watersports and HIC Kailua.  HIC just finished a pretty significant renovation - and the best part is they now carry foiling gear!!!

They carry Naish, Amundson, and Go Foil.  Pretty cool!!!

SUP Specific Hover

I recently became more edumacated on the 2018 Naish Hover foilboards.  There are different versions - a windsurfing specific model, one for SUP surfing and finally a crossover (to do both windsurfing and kitesurfing).  The windsurfing specific model does have flatter overall rocker (and the one I saw in person was full carbon).  Here is the SUP surfing model.

If I got one, it would be the crossover model to give the best of all possibilities.

Playing Catch Up - Spring East of Maui Swap Meet

I haven't posted in a few days - I'll slap up a few late posts... On Sunday we went to Annapolis to try and sell more water gear that we aren't currently using. The Naish board and the C4 paddle sold - I brought the kayak paddles back with me. I did manage to walk around a bit this time and I saw three boards that I had to walk away from (or risk buying them) - an old Naish Hybrid windsurfer, the Gaastra formula board in the picture and a Cabrihna kite racing board. If you are looking to sell a SUP, this is the place to do it - I had the Glide and La's board tied up to the truck and got asked more than a couple of times if I was selling them. If you are trying to buy a SUP, good luck - so was everybody else. We talked with the people around us trying to sell their stuff - I hate to stereo type but windsurfers are probably the smartest of the water people - takes a lot more dedication and understanding to be a good windsurfer. Anyone can surf and anyone and all their cousins can SUP, but the good windsurfers - far and few between - this swap meet always brings them out of hiding and into one place. Good times!

Twins Separated at Birth???

I'm not one to spread rumors, but.....

No - Harold Iggy didn't copy my board!!! Why would you even think that??? That's crazy talk!!!!

Seriously, it is awesome to see a shape that you conceptualized (yes I did that independently) evolve simultaneously. The term functional morphology describes how a function can evolve differently in different groups - the classic case is flight in birds and bats (and pterosaurs).

If I can get my board glassed before the 'Venturi" goes into production, these race/light wind kiteboards will be classified (at least by me) as functional morphs.

Well - in reality all the race boards are converging into a similar shapes - really a no brainer (if you daydream about surfing or the hydrodynamics of board performance).

Naish Boards Unveiled

Check out http://www.naishsurfing.com/en/index.html

Harold Iggy and the riders (Dave Kalama) have developed some narrow boards -

It'll be interesting to see these boards in action as they get out into the market.

Which one for me??? I'm a big fan of the Glide 14' and the Mana 9'5"

Next up at bat...

Leandra has a gazillion projects going on at any one time - Hawaiian quilts, sewing projects for herself or the kids, sewing projects for friends, the desire to cook new foods, physical fitness activities, sewing classes, and other things. She has said, and I am quoting, "you have to start a new project before you finish off your current one to keep your perspective fresh".

Well - even though I've got two ongoing projects (the woodie at home and the foamie with the class), I must admit I've been thinking about what is next (LA HAS GOTTEN ME BRAINWASHED).

Well, here it is - a sub 9'6" SUP. Probably will be a 9'2" - this one built for manuevering as it's main focus. The Walden will turn, but it still has a longboard/cruiser feeling to it. This next project will be built to have a wave dissecting capability that will make it the envy of all waveriders!!! That's the intention anyways... and if you don't like it when I'm done, well thats ok too. As long as La likes it then that's all that matter!!!

The Naish 9'3" is almost perfect - except that it has FCS fins (I hate FCS fins!) and the nose is a little skinnier that I would like (take the Naish 9'6" nose and put it on the 9'3" tail, use Futures boxes on the side thrusters and put a fin box in the middle and I'll buy it!). The Infinity Carver is also very close - it has the wider nose, curvy hips for turning and futures boxes. What it doesn't have is the bomb proof composite sandwich construction the Naish has.

Bamboo top and bottom skins, vacuum bagging (yes Nick - I have seen the light), 2# EPS core, carbon fiber as the bottom inner glass to promote stiffness - this will be pretty cool when it's all finished.

My mission - to take the best from both and make the "ENVY"!!!! Depending on when I get orders and to where, this may take a while...

But like La says "You gotten start before you finish"!!!

The 9'3" is credited to the Naish Surfing website; the Infinity Carver is credited to the Infinity Surfboards website - both AWESOME sources for AWESOME boards (I have several myself - so yes I do endorse them).

Windsurfer

This was one of the first models to come out of the Cobra (Thai) Factory. This was the beginning of total mass production of composite sandwich boards. Before this (back in 98???) custom was king.

I had to rearrange the board rack in the garage (the new SUP is really long and it now occupies the top rack - the windsurfers got moved to the bottom). When I pulled this one out, I remembered watching the onset of mass produced, super light, super strong boards and the sadness I had as the customs sat on the racks collecting dust. I loved the new boards and all the performance they promised, but they didn't have the character of the old, heavier, hand painted hand made boards.

Dilemmas...
