Bye Bye to Noe's Laser

Somewhat a sad day yesterday - we brought Noe's Laser over to her new owners.

Good news is the new owners are really nice people and they'll take good care of the boat.

And when she gets back from college, the new owners said Noe can use it anytime she wants!

Garage Works - 3/23/2024

I got a bunch of stuff done today.  First I got delamination repairs on Duke's prone foil board completed.

He is only paying me $40 for the repair (he's having a baby soon with his girlfriend - I figured he'll be buried in diapers soon so I'd give him a break) - so I got it to functional, not perfect.  These XPS foam board with the perforated deck skins are weird, and they are even weirder to fix.

I then cut out the templates I've had lying around.  These are No.33 and No.36.

And I transferred No.36 onto the glued up blank I made from the offcut.

And I got Noe to show me what she wanted fixed on her Laser.

I got the scratches/dings filled.  I'll sand them down tomorrow and maybe throw on a fiberglass patch for good measure.

Noe has already sold this boat to a KYC member - we are just trying to get it ship shape!

Noe Sailing - 2/10/2023

And while I was winging at Hickam Harbor, Noe was sailing over at Kaneohe Bay.

Tearing it up!!!

No - she is not puking her guts out here - she is jibing the boat in heavy winds.  But it does look like she is heeled over and puking her guts out.  Just saying...

Go Noe!!!

Noe Go Faster

Noe asked me to help her fix her Laser hull.  She is pretty nit-noid (like me) and wanted some chips filled, scratches addressed and the bottom treated (so she can go faster).

Pick off the bad spots - no sense filling in over something that isn't structurally sound.  We taped up the areas she wanted fixed.  I had her mix up the epoxy and make the milled fibers slurry.

Noe had to sail today (practicing for some events coming up), so I went ahead and sanded down all the repaired spots - same regime as with boards - 40-80-120-180-220-320-400-600.

And I polished the bottom.  She came home and gave a thumbs up.

Should be good for another season!

Tow Training

La, Noe and I drove around this evening so they could get more accustomed to towing the Laser.  This way I won't have to take off work to get Noe to sailing events or practices.

They passed the driving test.

Celebrating La's Birthday

We celebrated La's birthday early this year.  She really wanted all of us to go sailing as a family at the same time/place.  Here all rigged up Lasers and hit Pearl Harbor!!!

There actually was some decent wind.

The wind was really shifty - on, off, East, North, North-East....  This is La.

Noe getting hiked out.

And Marlon getting a good run in.

Good times on the water!!!!  After that, we headed to the Cheesecake Factory for linner.  We got so stuffed!!!

We're glad you had a great time today La!!!!

Noe Sailing in Nukin Winds

Noe is on spring break - and today she brought her boat out to Hickam to sail in a regatta.

I tried to make it out there before she was done - I just barely missed her.  It looked like she was having fun.  When I pulled up, there were four Lasers all capsized in whitecapped water.

Fun day for sailing!

Wing Foiling Session 1/31/2021

We towed Noe's Laser over to Hickam where she and I battled for supremacy of the oceans.  The first two runs I was off foil and got destroyed.  But on the last two runs, I picked up a gust and smoked Noe.  So it was a draw.

Ensis 6.0, HS1850, Uni 300, +1 trim fairing - good setup for today.

From the report, the wind looks like it was perfect.  On the water, there were some sizeable holes and schlogging was necessary.  I got in 6.97 nms and got to 14.5 mph on the powered runs.

La was out too on a Quest - fun session!!!

Boat Trailer Servicing

Noe and I worked on her Laser trailer today.  It had a bunch of rust bubbles because it was stored outdoors over at Kaneohe (lots of salt spray throughout the day, the rain to wash it down).  Won't have to worry about that over here in Ewa Beach.

Some instructions on using a grinder (but she didn't want to use it).

This was an exercise in getting rid of the really bad spots so any additional rain won't add to the rust.

Lots of work, but at least we were in the shade.

Next time we work on the trailer, it will be to redo the electrical wiring and also replacing the chains.

Windy Saturday Part 2

Here's Noe and her sailing bunch - oddly enough the wind was stronger where Marlon and I were.

Hiking!!!

Since the corona virus lockdown, this program has been closed.  Noe has been patient - but I'm glad she gets to fly again!!!

Foiling/Surfing Easter Sunday - April 21

This weekend La and I got a lot of work done on our backyard project.  Yesterday I got the crossbeams cut for the deck, then we went to Geobunga and bought a bunch of paver stones, and we dug up the middle section of the yard to prepare it for the rock/pebble installation.  Today we got a bunch of sand bags to settle in the landscaping rocks and we pretty much took a huge leap forward in getting this project done.  I'll post pictures of the project - we've got about a 1/4 of the middle section to cover up yet (ran out of weed barrier).  This is relevant for two reasons - first we hung up an old Laser sail that La had laying around for material for bags.

When this deck gets finished, I'll have a place to do foil and board maintenance - I can't wait (but it'll be after this coming payday - need to buy the planks and the screw gun).

Second was after getting all sweaty and nasty, I took Marlon out for another late afternoon surf.  We brought out the same gear as yesterday, but the swell dropped a notch in size (which was fine by me on the foil).

We were out for only an hour - I caught several but two of them were really long and I was definitely turning and riding up and down the bump.  Wave selection is everything - pick the right wave that isn't going to give you too steep a drop , but is still just about to break and the ride will be long and super fun.  Pick the wave that does have that steep drop and keeping the foil from breaching will be your only priority (which you'll likely to fail since you are moving too fast).  There were a few other foilers out at the break - one was recycling two or even three waves - looked like he was on an Iwa and a cut down Firewire Sweet or Baked Potato (whichever has the least tail rocker because there wasn't any on his board).   Marlon was catching a bunch - don't underestimate those Wavestorms!  Great weekend!!!

Happy 13th Birthday Noe!!!

Noe had the family out (sans Daddy-O who was asked to work part of a shift) for a sail on her birthday!!!  Lots of pictures so I'll let them do the talking...
