Garage Works - 8/13/2024

I got the projects in the garage completed today.

I sanded the repaired areas of the big Armstrong SUP/Wing board - and I even got them painted (white to match the rest of the board).  I didn't take pictures (yet).

Then I started sanding the chopped foil.

Here's the finished project.

Garage Works - 8/11/2024

And after I got back from Kailua, I helped Marlon get the longboard through rough sanding and installed the leash plug.

And I got the holes on Ken's board all sealed up.

And after I came back from WPB (next post), I placed carbon patches on Tim's chopped HA1125.

I should be able to clear these projects this week.

Garage Works - 8/7/2024

I had to wait a bit to get to the beach today (I was using La's car while she was taking Marlon's car to get serviced, and Marlon had my truck) - so I figured I'd get some progress on Tim's foil.

I sanded down the epoxy fill and faired out the volume distribution.  Here's the port foil wing tip.

Here's the whole foil washed off (and ready for laminating the tips).

I did get to change the foil section - where he wanted the new wingtip was far enough back that this section was pretty thick.  I thinned it out and used the epoxy to make a stable base for the carbon.

Not easy -

Garage Works - 8/6/2024

I'm trying to get these projects done and out of the garage (since the building area has been taken down).

Here is the wing tips filled on the chop shop request I got from Tim.

Next is to sand this down and laminate some carbon fiber to it.

And this is the weeping hole on Ken's wing board.  I opened the hole and have been letting it dry for a week.  I filled it today (since I was filling the wingtips).

Tomorrow I'll laminate carbon (probably one step).  Then I'll paint it white and this one will be done.

And Marlon put another fill coat on the board he is building.

Garage Works - 8/4/2024

I got a fill coat on the board Marlon is making.  The rail laps were too far apart so I needed to put thickened epoxy on to reduce the number of subsequent fills.

Tomorrow another fill coat needs to go on the top deck.

And today I also chopped Tim's HA1125 (insert throw up emoji here - I to this day fucking HATE Armstrong shit).

I used the dremel to cut the outline.

Then I used the grinder to thin out the tips.

Then I used the dremel again to dig out the foam core.

When I'm mixing epoxy for the top fill coat on Marlon's board, I'll add the bulk thickened fill for the rebuild.

After that hardens, I'll use the sander to shape the tips, then I'll add some carbon to cover the fill.

Did I mention I FUCKING HATE Armstrong foiling gear???!!!???

Kalani's Rear Stabilizer Pau

Here is Kalani's chopped down rear stabilizer sanded down to 1500 grit.

I'll get this back to him tomorrow morning (and he'll use it even on the low tide...)

Sealing Kalani's Chopped Down Rear Stabilizer

Made some time to get a coat of epoxy onto Kalani's rear stabilizer.  My goal is to get this back to him this weekend so I can focus on building out the new wingboard (and getting the new prone board started).

I wanted to get a "smoked" look to this one.  We'll see how it turns out after it's been sanded down.

Fixing Rear Stabilizer

Kalani asked me to reshape one of his rear stabilizers.

This was after rough shaping.  I got it tuned in since - now I need to seal it with epoxy on the sides and trailing edges.

Garage Works -11/11/2021

After foiling and breakfast, I headed to the garage to knock out some progress on the projects.  I sanded the HS1532CS trailing edge for a third time and placed a third coat of epoxy on.  After it cured I sanded it down yet again, and later this evening I'll get the last coat on, and get that through the whole sanding regime.

Then I sized up the latest ding repair job.  Went ahead and drew out what I thought needed to be cut out.

Taped off the deck so the wax job doesn't get gummed up.

Cut out the ding.

This looks like 100% fiberglass - no carbon...

And then I spliced on another piece of EPS.  I may get this dialed in this evening (cutting off the excess and sanding it down so the fiber can be laminated on).

Then I got the fiberglass cut out that will live at the bottom of the divynicell sheeting.

And I epoxied it in place.  The glass was 6 ounce fabric under the front decking and 4 ounce in the rear foot decking.  I mixed up 4.2 ounces of resin in order to make sure the cloth was saturated (the glass only weighed 1.5 ounces - so almost a 3 to 1 ratio.

The last thing I did in the garage before lunch was to sand Marvin's 15" rear stabilizer through the 40 grit sanding.  Lunch and errands are ongoing now - but I'll likely hit the garage again once I get back home.

Fixing Rear Stabilizers

Tim called me after the Saturday dawn patrol - he grounded his foil on the way in and the rear stabilizer (Armstrong V 200) lost a tip and some of the material where it wasn't supposed to come off (inside the "cut" chop shop line).  I told him to bring it by so I could look at it.  This tip was not salvageable (like Harris' stabilizer was).

I took the rough edges off, balanced the other side and poured some epoxy.  I let it sit over night, then started to rough shape.  Here's the initial result.

I asked if he wanted the tips to be sharp - he said no.  I dulled them down (just a slight rounding), then wet sanded the affected areas.  At this point I also wet sanded my chopped down 300 to get the reef rash off (had to balance the other side as well).

Wet sanding works miracles!

Garage Works - 7/25/2021

And before i went winging in the mid afternoon, I was at home with La (who wasn't feeling well).  She did start to feel better so I went to the garage to get more of the projects completed.  I started with fixing the 15" Nico rear stabilizer.

Good as new!

I then moved on to Harris' 420 rear stabilizer.  This one was definitely harder (and is still not done).

I was trying to see if the epoxy and carbon strands would hold.  They didn't, so on goes another layer of carbon.

I took a look at this after the test pot showed the epoxy was hard - definitely stiffer.

I also sanded down the repair on the 5'2" foil board and placed fiberglass patches in place.  I just need to sand and this board is ready to get back in the water.

I also placed epoxy/aerosil on Bryce's board where it still needed fill (the nose and the rail).  Productive day - and Harris' stabilizer and the 5'2" should be done tomorrow.  I'll sand down the repaired areas on Bryce's board and get fiberglass on the repaired areas tomorrow.  I need to clear these projects so I can focus on Kalani's winging board.
