Last Sunset of 2024

And I got home just in time to unpack the truck, pack the truck with beach chairs and family, then head right back to Pavilions.

We went to take Holiday pictures and enjoy the last sunset of 2024 together!

And there it is -

So relaxing!!!

Aloha 2024!!!

I Skipped a Day

By the time I got off work, I could tell the wind was dropping off.

That was actually ok - some times it is just as fun not going in the water!

Taking Measurements and La to the Beach

Through a long chain of acquaintances, I was able to get my hands on this board (custom Jimmy Lewis wing foiling board specifically made for Derek Hamasaki - the Master).  Of course, I templated it.

And since I was going to the beach to meet up with Roland to get the board back to him, La asked to come with.  How often does that happen???...

Nice time at WPB!

Afternoon Session - 11 November

First off - Happy Veteran's Day to all you veterans out there.  That life is not easy by a long shot, so thank you for what you've done in service to our country and helping to preserve our way of life.

Secondly - Marlon and I got an afternoon session in.  High tide at 1500 at 1.2', hardly any wind, and lots of energy still coming in from the south!

I had the 5'2" out with the HS1550.  I did not eat it as much today (still did on a few waves), but I'm getting the muscle memory built for the smaller sweet spot.  I love hauling butt on this foil on the straight aways, then pulling a hard turn to shift away from a breaking section.  There were a lot of people out today, so a lot of turning was to avoid them (turns are fun so I'll do them regardless).

I turned off the back of one wave and started pumping back out - I got 10 yards back out and ran out of steam - a good start to pumping back out.  I think I just need to figure out a cadence and I'll be pumping out soon enough.

I was batting about 50 when I took off on steeper waves (of which there were many).  If the wave pitches, I didn't stand a chance.  If the front had a gradual slope or had an escape route built in (gradual slope to the left or right of where I was), then I stood a chance.  Awesome when I made it - awesome wipe when I didn't.

I did hit bottom once when fighting white water on the inside, but I couldn't find even a scratch.  During these lower high tide days, I have been paddling the foil upside down through the break zone until I get out past head high depth.  Best insurance from hitting the bottom by far.

To close off this great day, the sunset was spectacular.

Sunday Evening Session - 27 October

Marlon and I hit the surf during the afternoon high tide.  It was 1.5' at 3:30pm, some light tradewinds, minimal swell - smallest day yet this three day spell.  At the end of the session, there were some larger bumps showing up (front runners of the Tasman Sea swell???), but for the most part it was really small.  If I could catch the wave, the Armstrong CF1600 delivered rides all the way to the beach.  I paddled back out with the board inverted just to make sure I didn't hit bottom (even though I did once while waiting for waves - no noticeable damage).

Marlon was catching a few - and he even ended up talking to the cutest girl out there (she paddled up to him!).

The slightly bigger swell kept me out (I think the cute girl kept Marlon out) - but the sunset was really the best part.

Solo Sunset SUP Session on Sunday

Long day today - took La and the kids to the sailing clinic, grabbed groceries and a haircut, came home and wash and waxed the 4Runner, edged and mowed the lawn, then went back to pick up the family, tow the boats back to the sail loft and finally ended the errands. There was a little light left so I hustled to the beach to catch a few waves. Marlon was pooped out from sailing the whole day so I ended up going solo. Oh - it was 78 degrees F when I hit the water... not trying to rub it in, just stating a fact. Nice relaxed swell, super low winds, awesome sunset - I've seen the sun go down over this same horizon hundreds of times and it never gets old! Sometimes the pictures from the GoPro are unexplainable - like this one. Such a mellow way to end the day!

Fly Fishing with Sharks on Friday Afternoon

The Trout Unlimited group had a Fishing With Friends outing this past Friday. Only a few people showed up (it was super windy). I started off fishing towards the harbor side, and eventually walking it out towards the channel. Along the way, I bumped into three of these guys... I finally did get a bite - but it bite through the tippet. I believe it was a triggerfish and it took one of the oama clousers I tied a while back. That still wasn't a fish to hand so my fishless streak is still going. But as the saying goes - it ain't the fishing that is good about fishing. Here's the sunset to validate that.

First Sunset on Oahu

This is the view from our friends' house. Not a bad view... I think the colors at sunset here are different than what the mainland experiences. They are lighter, more yellow/golden and purple than the orange and red. I think it has something to do with higher particulate count/different gaseous composition that the air on the mainland has - with more people and more machines emitting carbon dioxide and combustion products, and with the tradewinds blowing those same products away from the islands, there is a difference. Pretty in any case.

Sunrise and Sunset

I made a decent sized omelette for breakfast, and from the same table, here is the view of the sunset. We are staying at the Waves Kitesurfing Village (run by Kitty Hawk Kites). Nice place to hang out for the week on a proper vacation (it's been a while since we've had one of those - we travel a bit, but usually stay at convenient places vice nice places)!

What I Did Catch

This is what I did catch - another awesome sunset. Some things never change.

Friday Afternoon Sunset

With the Sun setting later, I was able to knock out a bunch of work and still throw lures for a few minutes.

I got a small hit, but I wasn't able to get it in.

But sometimes it's not the catch that matters - this sunset was awesome!

What Goes Up -

Must go down.

Sunrise looking East over the Southern most point of the island.

Sunset looking West.
