Garage Works - 2/22/2025

Yesterday I finished the repair work on Norm's Code 1130S

Lots of sanding.  And I went ahead and filled/sanded the scratches, and even faired in/tuned the trailing edge.

Back to fighting shape!!! 

And today Dennis dropped off a prone board to get signal windows installed. 

I got both the top and bottom windows opened up and filled.  Tomorrow will be sanding and placing the fiberglass patches.

Garage Works - 2/16/2025

Worked on some repairs today.

I got a second layer of carbon on Norm's front foil tips repair.

I also got the leash plug and signal window sanded and filled on Marvin's foilboard.

And I got No.34 back from Kalani - small patch required.

I'll have to do a fill coat on the front foil repair tomorrow.  And some sanding.

Garage Works - 11/18/2024

I opted to skip the water time today - tide was too low for my preference.

Plus I have some repairs stacking up in the garage - this is Prayot's AFS Pure 900.

The front carnage is filled and ready for sanding.

And the wing tip is rebuilt.

The solid paint marker on the wing is from Prayot (not sanding them).

Here is the foil all finished.

Wet sanded from 220-320-400-600-1000-1500

Came out nice!

Not sure how long it'll stay this way -

And Harris dropped off his Appletree board for a tail/rail repair.  I'm not sure what happened (I don't need the story), but the corner was pretty beat up.  I sanded off the shattered carbon (which seemed really "dry" - I know the use infusion to laminate these boards - but it felt like this needed more resin in this area). 

Here it is all clean and ready for a stabilization fill

I set it on the rack this way to keep the epoxy slurry from running.

One last look before the epoxy goes on - those individual fibers are what I was describing as "dry".  They also seemed like they really weren't bonded to the foam.  It could have been the impact - who knows.

And here is the fill.

I'll sand this tomorrow and get the carbon patches on.  I want to get this out of the garage so I can focus on No.39

Garage Works - 11/17/2024

I had a bunch of errands to run in between winging and getting home - haircuts and picking up stuff for La.  But once I got home, both Marlon and La had the garage clear.

I got through from the rough shaping to the fine sanding on No.39 this afternoon. 

And I even got the track block all measured out and ready to route

This is where I'll be placing the track block (which I'll try to get opened up tomorrow).

And after working on No.39, I got the excess epoxy off the repaired areas on Prayot's AFS Pure 900

The front edge repair needed additional epoxy to get filled properly.  And since I was working with epoxy anyways, I got the starboard wing tip all dressed up as well.

I should be able to fair this in tomorrow and then wetsand (and it could be done).

Garage Works - 11/16/2024

I mowed the lawn and edged the back lawn.  I also cleared the backyard of the plant debris that had been building up - then I hit the garage to do some shaping.  This is No.39 - a 5'8" foil drive/winging board.

Here is the blank cut out from the billet foam.

And here it is rough shaped.

It's easier to dial the shape in when the sun is out and it is bright.  I'll do this tomorrow.

And while I was in the garage, this is Prayot's AFS Pure 900.  He drove it into the reef yesterday.

I had to pick sand and rock out of it.  Then I sanded the areas that needed repair.

This will get fill and the tip will get a layer of carbon.

Filled and patch attached.

I'll trace the unscathed wing tip and get the patch grinded down to the same outline.

I'll need to add more epoxy to get this solid.

Taking a Break

I've been working late the past few days - I actually wanted to get a winging session in, BUT it was a really low tide and by the time I got to the beach I knew I wouldn't have much time out on the water.

I figured I'd just sit and watch Norm and Roland get some good turns in.

Norm was out on No.38 - first time winging with it and he said it was doing well for him.

I hung out to ask them how the session was - then I went home to finish the SK8 950 repair.

I rough sanded it with 40 grit using the random orbital sander.  Then I used 220, then used the solid paint marker, then redid the 220.

I finished with 320-400-600-1000-1500

It feels as strong as the original (same sound produced as the other side when tapped).

This is smoother than it looks

Sucks that the wingtip got crushed to begin with - but pretty darn satisfying to get something repaired well.

Garage Works - 11/4/2024

As with most recent Mondays, I took the day off from foiling/water time and took a short nap in the afternoon.

Then I hit the garage to get some of the projects further along -

I started with the SK8 950 repair.  I sanded the excess carbon and epoxy off to see where I was at.

You can see the little clear "hook" or cutout - that still needs to be filled, so more carbon and epoxy...

The extra layers will also help strengthen the wingtip so no big deals.

Slow and steady is the best way to fix a broken wing tip.

I'll sand this down again tomorrow and get it faired in.  If it goes well, I can use the solid paint marker and get it filled in and wet sanded.

And I got the center line filled in on Greg's board.  That's after sanding the excess epoxy from yesterday off the center line delamination repair.

This fill will help even out the unevenness between the two sides (and how they took the epoxy differently based on the condition of the foam). 

Tomorrow I'll sand this to get it flatter - then I'll put some rail tape over it to help make sure it doesn't ever open up unexpectedly.

I'll also sand the bottom fills and see if I can get rail tape over the nose and tail repair areas.

Garage Works - 3/11/2024

The mast I sent in for repair came back today.

Looks like new -

Except for a chip - probably took a good fall somewhere in the shipping process.

After I calmed down, I set off to fix it.  I used the JB Weld Plastic Bonder I had and viola!!!

It looks bonded well.

And I wet sanded it to 1500

This is the other side.

I also got a clear coat sprayed on, but I didn't take any pictures yet (I got a response to the Facebook Marketplace ad I put up for my UniFoil Progression 170 - sold it!)

This post is backwards chronologically - when I got home I had decided to rest today - too much winging lately.  Instead I decided to work on Matt's board.

I drilled out the corners of where the reinforcement block will go.

Then I used the jigsaw and got the slot walls trimmed out.  In order to get the block out, I used the pull saw and got the hole cleaned out nicely.

Dry fitting the block - perfect fit!!!

I'll get the block epoxied in tomorrow.

No.35 is coming along nicely!

Garage Works - 8/22/2023

Here is Ken's H800 with all the scratches filled in.

Just after these pictures I went ahead and used the solid black paint marker and covered the red glaze putty.

I didn't take a picture of the final (for today) product, but it came out a lot better than when I first got it.
