Evening Session - 1/27/2026

Marlon and I caught the evening surf (I needed to wash off all the sanding dust).

Tide was really low.  Light onshores (that weren't really altering the surf).

And the waves were chest high on the sets (but the sets were rather infrequent).

Marlon brought out the Evo - and he caught some good waves with it.  He was mostly on the Middles break.

I brought out the Cado again, this time with the Pivot version of the Taylor Knox NVS fins.

I think I surfed this board better with the rake version - but it really was difficult catching meaningful waves today - longboarders... and closeouts

I did catch some fun ones, but besides turns to get into a better position and running a few walls, the waves weren't presenting much opportunity today.

Roland was out on Foil Drive.

I think I'll use the Boogie fish next session - or the Sweet Potato with the Alpha Vector 3/2 quad set.

Evening Surf Session - 11/22/2025

I figured the waves would still be around this afternoon - and that this swell would start to back off.  

I didn't think the waves would be good enough for the newer boards I recently got - but the Sweet Potato can surf anything...

And I wanted to get the feeling of these Tappy Twins + trailer down some more.

I caught four really good waves - where I got in multiple turns and actually had a long ride.  You just really have to be patient and be in the right place at the right time.

This combo of board and fins are really good.  The Surfline energy calculated number was 20kJ (for future reference).

Evening Session - 11/9/2025

And knowing there was a north wind and 60 kJ waves coming up from the Southern Hemisphere, I grabbed the Album Twinsman and headed to WP.

I caught exactly three waves.

The first was good - got some turns in and had a big smile on my face.

The second was shorter, but I got in a couple of harder turns.

I caught the third on the outside and rode it most of the way back into shore - carving and driving all the way.

I passed a foiler/surfer who I recognized as he was paddling out - he shot a look that said it all -

Phenomenal ride!!!! 

This board needs energy - but boy what it can do with that energy!!!

Evening Session - 11/7/2025

There was pretty much no wind today thanks to the low pressure system hanging around.  But the reports were saying a small bump up surf wise on the south facing beaches was starting to show.

I figured it would be a good opportunity to take out the Asymmetric Boogie Fish!  Good thing I waxed it up yesterday.

This board is just as fun as the other Boogie Fish I have - but with this fin set up it felt looser.

I actually caught a couple of handful of waves and most were super fun.

Wing Foiling Session - 5/2/2025

Similar conditions to yesterday - but today the wind was gustier and the waves slightly smaller.  The set waves were still really good.

I brought the same gear as yesterday - the only change was a slight adjustment bringing the mast back a hair.

Good stats

The pulled back mast lead to reduced lift with the largest difference being longer takeoffs - and a little more back leg pressure.  This tells me I had it optimized previously.

I got plenty of waves - hard not to when you are one of only a few to access the outer lineup.

Strong wind, but gusty - made for some challenging conditions.  We were all falling because the chop would vent the foils.

The Silk is an excellent foil!!!  I may try to get my hands on a Silk 650...

Wing Foiling Session - 5/1/2025

I got a really late start this afternoon - had something more important to do (Noe had a concert that we were able to watch online).

The swell picked up significantly - and I wanted to use the Silk 850 with the HA40 rear stabilizer which I feel were made for days like this -

The wind was nice and strong and consistent (but I still didn't trust it and went slightly larger than I needed to - North Nova Pro 5.0)

Zach, Roland and Kalani were already out when I got there.  And Duke paddled out later on his DW board.

The waves were head and a half high and reeling when the sets rolled through.  From the chart below you can see the wind was straight on while riding the waves - PERFECT!!!

And this swell wasn't even pointed at Hawaii - we are outside the window of the main push.  Considering we have to paddle wings out through the white water, probably not a bad thing we aren't getting the full force of the swell energy.

I got in a bunch of critical tacks on both sides.

Earlier would have been perfect for the Nova Pro 4.2 - but while I was out, the 5.0 provided a stress free session (except for having to paddle way out to the wind line - the only side effect of the east wind).

Top speed was on a wave for sure - probably one of the bigger ones while taking the drop.

Roland was jumping really high - using the incoming waves as huge ramps.  I'm actively debating if No.41 will be a trench board or a winging board purpose built for jumping... probably the former - when I'm thinking straight I remember my joints are not young anymore.

Wing Foiling Session - 5/9/2023

The forecast extended the wind event one more day - my body was telling me to rest, but I figured I can rest when the wind dies back starting tomorrow.

The wind was up, but this was definitely the lightest of the past several days.  The tide was up, and the waves were also smaller than the previous days.

Same setup as the past few days.

Getting started was the hardest part today.  Once I got up, I didn't drop off foil for nearly an hour.  The wind felt like it had more North in it today.

I got some solid tacks straight onto waves - SO MUCH FUN!!!

I think this wind was the lower limit of the SW2 4.7

I prepped the SW2 5.2 I got from Donnel - I added the leash pigtail and the harness line.  I also sprayed waterproofing onto the canopy of both the 4.7 and the 5.2

Look at the solid blue!!! The Eagle 1090 is that good at winging!!!

I think the 26.5mph reading was a wipeout while I was starting up.  I felt my top speed was slower today (looks like I didn't hit 20mph today) - but that was the lower wind speed.

This was a really great run of wind and waves!  I got to try the Triton X-1 and ride some great waves with that foil and the Eagle 1090.

With the wind down, I may try to get a new wingboard shaped that can also double as a prone board for use with the Foil Drive.  That is if I don't blow through time by prone foiling....

Wing Foiling Session - 5/8/2023

Almost a repeat of yesterday.  Waves a little smaller (but closer period).  Wind a little lighter, but still enough to use the SW2 4.7.  I had contemplated using the Eagle 890 - but I'm glad I opted for the Eagle 1090.  And the tide was really high so I had a low chance of grounding the foil.

Best winging combo I could ask for.

I spent almost an hour and a half out in the surf.  Every now and then over head sets would still pull through - and I caught a bunch of them!!!

I was able to luff the wing a lot more today than yesterday.

I tacked onto several waves today, and also got in a behind the back tack.

I think for me, if the wind goes over 25 mph steady, that's when I would drop down to the Eagle 890.  I really value the easy get up and go of the 1090.  Especially if there are big whitewater walls moving around.

I thought I was going faster than 20mph - oh well, maybe that's where the 890 would work better.

Every time I look at the forecast, they keep extending this wind event one more day.  I really need to stay home one day and get the mast tracks set into Kalani's board...

Not sure if that's tomorrow or not... it's going to be a really long light wind run after tomorrow.

Wing Foiling Session - 5/6/2023

Mid morning wing session at Hickam.  The wind was up (and down) but definitely on the stronger side.

I used the same setup as Friday - No.25 with the X-1, SW2 4.7

I didn't go outside because it looked gnarly - the tops were being blown off the waves - and I also wanted to focus on transitioning on the X-1.

I was able to get tacks both ways on this foil.  I think if I had the 1090 on, I would have had to use the SW2 4.2

Wing Foiling Session - 5/5/2023

The wind was up today.  And after work, so was the tide.  And the surf was also up - both the declining South Swell and the wind swell from the ENE trades.  All that combined made for interesting riding conditions today.

Mix that in with taking the Triton X-1 out in surf for the first time - today was awesomely challenging!  Roland was out also.  He said it was definitely down from yesterday (which was good because it was still big - on one wave I had it was overhead and I was high up on foil already).

Jibing the X-1 is pretty easy - it naturally wants to roll over.  I actually got tired because I was having to constantly manage the pitch.  It was not bad, but without a stabilizer I definitely had to pay attention to what was going on.

This foil isn't a replacement for conventional foils - it is an alternative to mix it all up - something to make you think and expand your horizons to what is possible.

I was perfectly powered (a little on the overpowered side - but again that what this foil likes) on the SW2 4.7.  If I was on the Eagle 1090, I would have been on the SW2 4.2.

Considering yesterday I was on flatwater at Hickam, it made sense that I went a little slower today.  The cross chop and faster period wind swell really made riding fully powered down the wave faces super challenging.  I ended up breaching a few times.

I took advantage of the low speed aspects of the X-1 - stalling to allow a bigger wave behind catch up - then I would apply front foot pressure and accelerate.

From my heartbeat tracking, you can see I was more excited at the first half (not having taken this foil out in the waves) and more calm at the back end.

The wind is going to be around for a few days - so more testing to come!

Evening Session - 5/3/2023

Surf was definitely bigger today - but the wind came up and didn't back down (although it was wingable, the wind was up and down and with the surf as big it was I didn't really want to deal with that).

I opted to use the Seaside and Beyond -

The surf was really hard to catch - you were either in a super critical takeoff, or the waves would flatten out underneath you.

I did catch a handful that had some length to them - but nothing remarkable.  I think I would have done better if I brought the Hypto Krypto or the Cyatic and stayed in the critical takeoff zone.

The lineup was crowded - and full of assholes today.  I called it and opted to go home and make burritos for dinner.

Tomorrow I'll wing Hickam with my new foil - the Triton X-1

Evening Session - Christmas Day 2022

We had a really fun and relaxing Christmas this year.  Towards the end of the day, Marlon and I brought our longboards out.  To our surprise, the conditions were really good!  Waist to chest high surf, with zero wind and a medium tide perfect for longboard surfing!!! 

I caught several long rides where I could carve up and down the walls.  This seemed more like a summer evening session than conditions for Christmas.

This was a great Christmas present from Mother Nature!

Evening Session - 11/2/2022

The wind had been up and down all day - I didn't have my sights on winging today, I had been planning to jump on the rising surf on the Pigfish.

The waves were bigger today - but they were also pretty closing out.  Taking off on a bigger wave just for the drop is a blast.  Any distance and turns that result are gravy.  Not a foiling day for the dumpy waves and the really low tide.

The pigfish delivered!!!  I caught a handful of waves, then called it so I could go and pick up Marlon from school (or at least the bus stop).

Roland was out with a board he borrowed from his co-worker.  He took off on a few then the pin pulled from the leash plug.  He made one po-ta-gee leash by wrapping the leash tail around the GoPro mount at the front of the board. 

The swell is supposed to be bigger tomorrow...

Evening Session - 6/3/2022

Marlon and I hit the beach again this evening.  The swell had dropped considerably, but there was still some energy to be tapped if you were patient.

Marlon opted to fly his drone and take pictures.  I tried to swap out the 1095 for the 1210, but I wasn't able to get it onto the Stringy fuse - I'm going to have to do some fitments this weekend...

I'm glad I had the 1095 - I was still able to drive it hard and got some really long rides out of it.

Dawn Patrol - 5/29/2022

Close carbon copy of yesterday - Marlon on his Seaside, me on the 4'8" prone board. I thought the conditions were better than yesterday (although that was a topic of debate out in the line up today).  Regardless - there was less wind, the surf was a tad bit smaller, and the current was down from the river it had been the past few days.

I did mix it up a bit though - 1095 on the Stringy fuselage (60cm) with one of my 14.875" rear stabilizers bolted on.  When I was setting this up last night, I had to use both the circle shims and the PPC plate shim to level it out.  It was level - I didn't have to wrestle the setup to ride level.

But looking at the foil, you can definitely see the lean backwards on the mast.

I caught a bunch of waves and had some long rides - I have to pump this foil less than the 980 (and it was smaller today) - but the lift is a lot more progressive and with the shorter fuselage, the whole setup had a lot more pitch sensitivity than I am used to.  The other thing I noticed during setup was the rear stabilizer bolts needed to be downsized to 14mm and I had to still use a shim to get enough distance to tighten the bolts.

Kalani, Tim, Noel and Ryan were out - lots of comparing notes on equipment today.  Roland rolled up after 8 - I got a closer look at his setup - here is where his fairly new Hyper 190 is cracking.  He definitely tests the limits of his equipment.
