Checking Out Heeia Pier and the Resident Squid
After Marlon's practice, he wanted to go visit one of the plant nurseries he had not been to in a while (Once Again Succulents). We did that (check out my other blog www.compulsivesucculentsandpottery.blogspot.com for that post) and since we were on that side, we made the trip out to the Heeia Pier. When we got there, the kids went to the closest water and immediately saw four squid just hanging out in shallow water.

The General Store was closed so we couldn't eat the ono plate lunches. but at least La knows where this place is now.

When we got back to the van, the squid were still at the same spot. Noe said "we should keep a net in the van from now on so we can catch stuff when we see them" - time to find the nets ;)

Surfing with Old Friends
I've known Nick Y since 1994. I've known Jimmy M since 1996. I first met Burr V in Kuwait in 2003. And Charlie and I first met in 2008. Great bunch of guys to keep me pushing the limits.
Good fun surf!!!

Speaking of limits, I paid some dues again this day (Saturday 1/9/2016) - late takeoff (cocky me) and I hit the reef. Game over (didn't want to chum the waters).

Mas Sandbar Photos
You know you are a good teacher when your student starts teaching others (and you hear your words flowing from understanding).
Definitely put a huge smile on my face ;)
I'm glad we went on a day when the tradewinds were variable - made the entire trip much nicer for the families!

Kaneohe Bay Sandbar Field Trip
On Sunday we took a pontoon boat out to the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar with the Yamodis family. Tons of fun and everyone got lots of water time.

Oh - and I got a skunk even fishing with bait... but I still had fun ;)

Crabs, Barnacles, and Snails/Man o' War Oh My
While we were waiting to snorkel, we caught two species of crabs (acropora crab and a ghost crab).

We also noticed a bunch of man o' war jellyfish on the beach. Upon closer examination, we saw purple bubble blower snails on the beach also (last time I saw these shells was back in Diego Garcia). La and I were discussing the presence of the jellyfish and the mollusk and the relationship they have - and I actually can't remember. I think I ended up saying the snail eats the jellyfish. I do know the snail blows bubbles to stay near the surface and ride the same winds that the jellyfish use. I look these up in more detail later.

And last but certainly not least, Marley - the buoy head pirate!!! Complete with barnacle hair.

New Year's Snorkeling
We waited out the wind at the beach near the runway at Kaneohe. After an hour or so, we were able to get in the water and check out the fringe reefs.
