Dawn Patrol - 4/18/2020

Marlon and I hit a dawn patrol with Jimmy - Chun's Reef.  This was Marlon's first trip to unsheltered North Shore energy.  And since he had his longboard, he was out and riding before I even got to the lineup.  His first wave was a really good one, as were most of his other ones.  Head high or slightly bigger on most.  I was totally stoked for him!!!

I brought the Pigfish out and it took a few waves to get synchronized with it.  I did have three longer waves with it and the fish side (my toe side, also the starboard side) really wants to fly.  On my longest wave I was able to outrun a plunging section to get out to clean face and wrenched an off the top turn - there is some huge potential with this board.

It was great surfing with Jimmy again!  I used to dawn patrol year after year with this guy 20+ years ago!!!  Some things never change - great times!

Jason and Mikaila's Elopement

My old friend Jason and his new wife Mikaila eloped (with friends and family present) this past Monday at Papailoa Beach up on the North Shore.  La and I made the trip up to be there!!!

There were a bunch of honu in the super shallows.  In all my time on this island, I actually think this was the first time I went down this road and stepped on this beach.  I figured as much because I hadn't seen this gate before (and I certainly would have remembered it).

Awesome small Hawaiian wedding on the beach!!!!  And we followed it up with dinner (reception) at Haleiwa Joe's.  Here's La's whole fried fish

It didn't stand a chance!!!  Congratulations Jason and Mikaila!!!  Thank you for letting us be a part of your special day!

Big Surf on Saturday January 13th, 2018

I took the kids up to see the big surf breaking on the North Shore this past Saturday.  I opted to take them over to Mokuleia Beach Park (google maps showed Kamehameha Highway pretty much at a standstill above Haleiwa).

And since we were up there, we hit the best burger shop in the universe - Kua Aina.

Earlier in the day we woke up to an emergency broadcast message on our phones saying there was an inbound ballistic missile, that we should take cover and the message wasn't a drill.  Nothing a Kua Aina burger can't fix!!!

A Day up at Haleiwa and Pupukea

We went up to the North Shore today to hangout and checkout a plant sale (at a spectacular garden - for those pictures checkout my other blog - www.compulsivesucculentsandpottery.blogspot.com). We had breakfast at Cafe Haleiwa. Burned some time at the North Shore Marketplace And after the plant sale/garden tour, we had lunch at a Kono's (pulled pork place - it was good, but my smoked pork is better ;) ) And more of the ubiquitous chicken - these guys are the real rulers of the earth (or at least these islands - such is the destiny of any creature that can/will eat a cockroach). Great day up North!!!

More Pictures from Sunday's Beach Trip

La and the kids had a shift to pull on Sunday morning for their community service activity. I am not trained, so I couldn't help directly. So I grabbed a rod and went fishing. I saw a few omilu making runs at schooling oama, and a couple of kaku - but I couldn't get them interested. But with scenery like this, not catching is just fine. There was even a little surf (next time I'll bring a SUP). La in action (look for the umbrella). If you're a tourist, the laws and regulations apply to you also (especially dudes with bleached hair and red speedos - @ssh0le). I'll update this post when I get some pictures off La's phone (some good ones)! Update - and here they are:
