Yes - Those are Some Big Trevally in the Pond...

I went to the Blaisdell Center today to check out the Hawaii Ocean Expo. Actually I had wanted to go to the Bishop Museum - the YMCA was sponsoring a free day at the museum - but so did everybody else. I drove around a couple of time to see where I could park and walk to the museum but so did everyone else. So I beat feet to the Ocean Expo. This was the first time in a very long period that I had been to the Blaisdell. When I got there, I stopped by the pond and to my surprise, there were a bunch of trevally (bluefin and black) swimming in about 16" of water. They all were sporting tags, but I wasn't sure of the circumstances that got the fish in the pond. I wonder how many people walk past this pond and think "man - I could come back tonight with my flyrod and have a really good time!!!!" Come on - I can't be the only one!!!!

Fishing Spot 3

I felt compelled to try just one more spot. I pulled up the pier at Kaneohe. I did not break out the fly gear - I rigged up the 8'6" spinning rod with a minuscule kastmaster, I think it was 1/20 ounce. The best thing was I FINALLY shed the skunk!!!! I ended up catching three baby queenfish and two papio. I let them all go back - I figured it would be good karma - even though the bigger ones would have made easy gyotaku prints. The queenfish had spines in all the wrong places (where I would hold the fish to get the hook out). My hand felt itchy for several minutes after I got stuck. Small price to pay for CATCHING!!!!

Saturday Afternoon Trolling

Squid Skirt Lures RULE!!!

I was using a Mark White 7" Bullet in Cobalt Blue -

We did well today!

Trolling and Flyfishing are definitely polar opposites, but the one thing they have in common is "when it's good - it's good", "when it's bad, it is down right frustrating and hugely suckomungous.

Trolling today did not suck, not like losing three BFT after hook ups (this morning).

More Fishing

Mike's Trevally.

I've got to catch one of these soon. I've been concentrating on catching the small fish for a challenge, but I need to remember that fighting a great fish is also challenging (duh).

Behind Mike is the point. This is my new favorite fishing spot - pain in the ass to get to, but well worth it. We speculated that at a really low tide, you can walk out a ways to the deeper part of the lagoon - and catch more Trevally!
