North Shore Outting

Noe had a sleep over up at Pupukea yesterday.  We went to pick her up and since we were going to be up on the North Shore...

When I checked the forecast, they were calling for head high and under.  Marlon and I brought our smaller wave boards.  Kaylani brought her new shortboard.

La dropped us off at Ehukai Beach Park (really Sunset Elementary) and off we went!!!

It was super crowded - I bypassed Ehukai and paddled out at Gas Chambers (least crowded spot - but still crowded).

It had been a while since I've been in well overhead waves up there - yes, the waves were breaking well overhead.  I actually setup the Hydronaut last night - but opted for the Great White Twin...

If I had the paddling power and entry rocker of the Hydronaut, I probably would have gotten some sweet rides.

Kaylani caught a nice one.

I finally caught one and rode it to the inside - the time had come to get picked up.

Crowded surf spots... that probably the biggest reason I use the Foil Drive and the wing - it was still nice getting wet up there!

Dawn Patrol - 12/13/20

Hit the dawn patrol with Lance, Jimmy and Marlon.  It was supposed to be just overhead, so I brought the Dually.  Jimmy brought his Astro Pop.  Lance brought his 8'6" SUP.  And Marlon brought his longboard.  We paddled out at Chun's.

Well - it wasn't just overhead.  The swell that was supposed to show later in the afternoon arrived 30 minutes after we paddled out.  I saw Lance catch one that ended up being 2.5X overhead (would have made an incredible picture, but I didn't have a camera).

This picture was from early in the session.  That's Jimmy behind Marlon and me behind Jimmy.  This wave was an overhead gem - then almost every wave after was twice its height.  Super steep takeoffs.  Marlon got picked up by one and he got ran through the heavy duty cycle.  His leash broke off and I paddled in to get a hold of his board.  This was his first working over.  We called it after this.  I couldn't have taken off on any of these bombers anyways (might need to shape a 7.0'+...).

On the way back, passing Lani's it actually looked like it was fun sized (just overhead).  Not sure if it was a lull we were looking at, but kept trucking.  Marlon did go out later in the day to WPB to regain his confidence.

Big Surf on Saturday January 13th, 2018

I took the kids up to see the big surf breaking on the North Shore this past Saturday.  I opted to take them over to Mokuleia Beach Park (google maps showed Kamehameha Highway pretty much at a standstill above Haleiwa).

And since we were up there, we hit the best burger shop in the universe - Kua Aina.

Earlier in the day we woke up to an emergency broadcast message on our phones saying there was an inbound ballistic missile, that we should take cover and the message wasn't a drill.  Nothing a Kua Aina burger can't fix!!!
