More Fish for Dinner and a New To Us Grocery Store

This was lunch on Saturday - pompano. We bought these at the "Seafood City" store near our house. And they were imported - we've caught these on the East Coast. Noe said "I like the way Lola cooks it better". She still ate it up ;) Here's some other pictures from the store. We'll definitely be adding this place to our list of places to get groceries (La liked the cleanliness especially - but ensemadas didn't hurt either).

Surf and Fishing Report 10/4/2014

We took a drive down to Matanzas Inlet to got shelling, surfing and fishing. The coquina is really fine and can get pretty think at this beach (North side of the inlet). La and the kiddoroosters went out the second sand bar to catch the breaking waves. After a little bit, I saw them paddling back in pretty quickly. They said they saw a shark in the lineup and calmly came back in. The tide was coming in at the same time, so the kids found another, even more fun diversion - what they've named the "Lazy River". It's really the trough of the last sandbar before the high tide line. As the tide comes back in, the waves start to fill it back in and as it drains, you get a steady flow back to the low point. The kids ride their boards on the current and I would say have even more fun than they do when surfing. I had the surf gear and was pounding the trough between the second and third sandbars - but I got nothing. I brought out the cast net and made some casts to see what was running just offshore (inside the waves). I caught a bucket full for finger mullet (and let all but seven small ones back in the water - I kept the seven to use as bait later). I asked Noe if she wanted to cast and she caught one!!! Lastly - I saw some fish that were not mullet hanging right where the water and shore met. They were really small pompano. I hope this means their bigger siblings are on their way back down south. Another great beach day in Florida!!!

Hooked SUP Fishing near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Saturday morning we took the armada to one of the beaches on the Southern end of the Chesapeake Bay. The wind was from the South-South West so it was pretty flat for us. La went for a long paddle and I anchored to keep an eye on the kids (who were trolling for plankton with some nets we made) and to cast a line further out and still use lighter tackle. I caught a few croaker while out on the Hooked SUP. I tried laying a crab line out with chicken neck on it and when checking on it, I saw the target I was hoping for - baby pompano. After catching the croaker and transferring them to Marlon on the Grom paddleboard to take back to the beach to our specimen bucket, I paddled back to the beach to try my hand at catching the pomps on a tenkara rod. After you take a few minutes to adjust, you begin to notice all kinds of small fish hovering in the shallows (to not get eaten I presume). Between Marlon throwing the cast net and me using the tenkara rod with #16 hook, we brought a baby bluefish that had a semi-circular chunk missing out of it's back (almost something's lunch), some anchovy type fish and several small pomps ranging from very small to almost edible size. I didn't end up paddling out too far since I was hanging out with the kids, but I can see how paddling out to deeper water, anchoring and throwing out a rig with a bigger hook could lead to a much harder tug-o-war match with a piscine competitor. We had a blast and all this made me miss living in Virginia Beach even more than I already did.

The rest of the day

Came back from trolling and cleaned the fish we caught.

Ate some BFT as sashimi and poke.

Went fishing again (shoreline - with tenkara pole) and caught my first pompano! Just a small guy but good fun especially on the tenkara pole! Also caught a dart (but let it go).

I hooked up a parrotfish three times - the same parrotfish - and it broke me off three times. I am going to have to figure out another rig to catch it with....

Marina Jet-Dock Fishing

I attended a wedding reception yesterday - a few guys were fishing at the O'Club Beach within view of where I was sitting. They were pulling in some good sized bonefish on a regular basis. It made it really hard to sit still. I eventually was able to "tastefully" bow out and Mike, Sonny (new guy) and I made a break for the Marina Dock.

We were initially throwing topwater pencil minnow lures. We got hits from small barracuda. Mike landed two of them, the one in the first picture is the larger of the two. My hit resulted in a cut leader. Nice, quick and intense fights!!!

I took a close look at the teeth and now will use a homemade dehooking device to reduce risk to fingers (and hopefully improve mortality rate - especially of the snapper that sometimes get gut hooked).

For today (Sunday) -

We went back this morning and fished for four hours.

Mike got a small trevally early on.

I brought the fly rod and my light spinning pole.

I hooked up with two larger tangs (Yellowfin Surgeon or Pencilled Surgeon - I didn't pull them up so I couldn't tell) that ended up winning the tug of war game (and are now carrying around some Bonefish Biter flies).

I then started using the spinning pole with squid and got three nice sized pompano.

A big school of mullet moved in (despite there being two rather large Blue Trevally patrolling the area) so I tied up an "algae" fly. The mullet were not showing any love for the fly so I started targeting the manini (convict tangs) that were grazing off the pier. I site casted and nailed one! At least I took one on the fly today - didn't mentally make up for the loss of the two flies, but it was a legitimate fly land.

I ended the session with two hits off the spinning gear - the first was most likely a bonefish and it spit the hook after a good fight. The second was definitely hooked - it was pulling line off the reel and was making me walk up the dock. It was eventually able to undo the leader knot. After cussing up a storm, I conceded a 'tie' to the finned warriors.

I'll try to get another session in later today - it's raining solidly

Friday - Saturday - Starting Something New

It has been a long week -

I had the full intent to leave work at 1600 to either kite or fish.

I didn't leave until 1730. I bolted home and went to the O'Club Beach.

I landed a small bonefish - it had a ton of fight in him and as I release it back into the surf, the stress of the entire week washed away...

So here comes Saturday. Fishing at a different point around Thunder Cove. I brought the fishing kite to see if I could push a piece of bait way out to the drop (inside the lagoon drop, not the big one ocean side). The wind was patchy so I decided not to risk dropping the kite. After an hour of trying and no real bites, we moved back to the tried and true point on the other side.

I saw a number of rays, mullet, some batfish and a rather large permit - but no bites. Mike caught a medium sized bonefish. Frustration set in.

Lunch time comes around - as soon as I get home, I stuffed my face with a couple of bites and then grabbed my pole and a small piece of squid. I pitched the squid out at the shoreline just out my door and I landed a small pompano. A couple of more casts and I caught another one.

SO - no skunking for me today.

There was a regatta today and I posted a second place just behind the British Representative - rounding the outbound buoy, I did not see the inboard mark and the Brit Rep got a few boat lengths ahead of me. I made some time up, but he sailed a solid race to properly beat me.

Immediately after the regatta, they had a standup paddleboard race using the Starboard Starts.

Guess who won that race...

It's not about the size of the fish...

Sometimes it's not how big a fish you get -

This pompano would take my bait - until I used a much smaller hook... Then I was catching him and his brothers like there was no tomorrow!

I say "him" because when I was unhooking HIM, I caught a bunch of white gooey stuff on my arms and face while the fish shook in anger of being caught.

These guys put up a good fight for their size!

Best of all, this is right out my door!
