Garage Works - 7/1/2025

I went ahead and repaired the crack in No.41 yesterday evening.

You can just see the crack here -

Not sure why I added this picture - kinda the same thing as the first.

And this is the peel ply over the 2 ounce patch placed on with epoxy.

I already pulled the peel ply this morning, sanded the repair and sprayed replacement clear coat.  I'll post more pictures of the completed repair shortly (since the wind is in that "in between" level - I figured I should rest up today after yesterday - that way when the wind comes up tomorrow, I'm better prepared - I'm not doing anything else... might as well oogle over the board and stick some more stickers on).

Garage Works - 6/28/2025

And also from yesterday - I spent some time in the garage trying to get No.41 over the finish line.

After remembering I had a trench in this board, I looked to see if the area I cut to place the back foot strap was clear of the trench - NOPE.

That made my decision to fill and patch easy - so no foot strap inserts on No.41

After thinking about the repair, I figured it was easiest just to fill with milled fibers/epoxy, then add carbon patches above the cut areas.

And here it is all patched and waiting for the epoxy to harden.

I had already pulled the peel ply and added the fill coat last night, and this morning I sanded and sprayed clear coat - but that's for another post.

Garage Works - 7/25/2024

I was going to go winging after work, but while at the beach, I wasn't feeling it.  I figured I'd be better served knocking out some honey-dos and getting Matt's board finished up.

I took off the peel ply from yesterday and sanded down the high spots.

Then I got the carbon overlays prepared.

The top deck came out pretty good.  Next up was the bottom deck and the laps onto the top deck.

And this is the finished product (I didn't take pictures of the wrap in peel ply).  With the afternoon summer heat, the epoxy has been hardening in shorter time frames.

And here is the fill coat.

I asked Matt if he still wanted the tail painted blue.  I kinda like the raw carbon look -

Garage Works - 5/30/2023

This is how I ended up working the rails on Jimmy's board - thin layer of epoxy to fill, and peel ply to take up the excess.

There were some creases in the eopxy post hardening, so I went ahead and sanding the entire repair area to get more excess epoxy off.

The finished product came out really nice!  And it was super solid through the repair area.  This board will be in a race next month - Maui to Molokai - and I feel confident the board will serve Jimmy well for years to come!!!

Garage Works - 9/25/2022

I got some work done in the garage today.  I didn't get a picture of it, but I got the carbon sheet cut out, the mast track boxes epoxied in, carbon patches placed and the carbon bottom sheet laminated.  This was mid morning.  By the afternoon, the epoxy was nice and cured, so I sanded the burrs off and got that board ready for the carbon rail tape.

With that work done, I shifted to the other board.  This one I wanted to glass like the other recent boards.  I cut out the innegra deck sheet, placed patches in the high load areas, then placed some of the innegra/carbon I used on the top deck of the other board as heel patches.  Then I cut the lap reliefs, mixed epoxy, added the pale blue tint.

The innegra up by the nose wasn't sitting down, so I went ahead and added a layer of peel ply and got the kids to help me get it tacked down.

Also in this picture, you can see No.26 perched up across the other boards.

I guess if I had set it up prior to laminating, I could have stuffed this into a vacuum bag.

Tonight, I'll check on how much rail tape I have (I'll need enough for these two boards and Prayot's wing board).

Tomorrow, I'll get the peel ply off, setup the bottom deck laminate, epoxy in the track boxes, and laminate the bottom deck.

If I have enough time, I may try and get the rail tape on No.26
