Garage Works - 5/11/2023

Before heading out to catch a few waves, I sanded down the fill coat on the mast track repair, and then I sanded the areas on the rail that needed patching.

After that, I went ahead and added some epoxy to seal up the small paddle strike dings.

These have already hardened and the board could go in the water now.  But - I have to make it look nice - that is tomorrow's work load.

More sanding on all the spots with epoxy, then adding some black posca along the carbon edges, then spraying clear coat - then DONE!!!

Garage Works - 5/9/2023

When I got home, I put everything away (the garage is for parking two cars now) - but with La and Noe at a flute workshop and Marlon at a class, I had the full garage free to work on this board repair.

I got the slots routed out.  Then I fit the boxes, taped them up and cut out the carbon patches.

Then I epoxied in the boxes.

Added each layer of carbon individually -

Making sure to burp the area around the boxes -

Then finished with the cap sheet.

I used 3.5 ounces for the boxes, then 5.6 ounces for the carbon overlays.  I used a brush to apply the epoxy and to make sure there were no bubbles or unlevel spots.

Tomorrow I'll grind the boxes open, sand the high spots, and place the fill coat.

Thursday I'll sand and place a second fill coat if needed.

Friday I'll try and finish the repair so I can get it to Kalani on Saturday morning.

Garage Works - 5/3/2023

I actually did this work yesterday - I lined the slot with carbon fiber then epoxied in the reinforcement block.

This was one of the better inserts that I've done.  Sealing the slot with a thin coat of epoxy and cooling it with a fan to counter the exotherm made the rest of the process almost easy.

The carbon laid flat and the block was just a few millimeters proud.

Today I used the Makita planer and got everything flush.  Then I measured and marked the finbox lines.  I didn't cut them out because I am hoping the vacuum attachment I ordered comes in.  Even if it doesn't, I'll cut the finbox slots tomorrow and get the boxes epoxied in.

Garage Works - 4/22/2023

After getting back from Kailua and eating the Agnes malasadas, I worked in the garage for a bit.

I got the bottom deck fill coat on.  I even got a second layer of epoxy over the decals (so I can sand over them).

I kept an eye on the epoxy while it hardened - and then I turned my attention to Kalani's SUP Foiling board.  The boxes were moving and the deck has some delaminations.

Cracked HD foam...

After a lot of routing, I got all the bad stuff out.  The new reinforcement block now fits.  I'll put this job on hold until I get the syringe I ordered.  That will help me get epoxy into the delaminated spots.
