First Fishing Outting

Marlon asked to go fishing on his Birthday - so fishing we went!  We used ika strips for bait, but I actually had more action on lures.  I saw a kaku swim up to a small brown Mark White ceramic lure I was using and cut the main line.  Then I got this guy -

Nice sized omilu papio - not a bad first fish of the year!  This guy hit a 1/12th ounce kastmaster - silver with a blue stripe.

Marlon also hooked up with an omilu.  He got his fish on an ika strip.

It is really nice to go fishing and not go home skunked.  Multiple that by 10 for a first trip of the year!

Hawaii Ocean Expo

We checked out the Hawaii Ocean Expo this evening. Similar grouping of booths and vendors as last year, but the organizers moved the venue down to Aloha Tower. Windward Boats was there teasing me... Naoki was there printing fresh tshirts for the keiki. La and Marlon were discussing Marine Biologist education and job paths with the education booths. And I had fun looking at all the fishing stuff - And eating a sample from a place I've been wanting to go to (they catch all the fish they serve) - what a job!!! Good way to spend a Saturday evening!

Fishing Report 8/30/2014

We are visiting my Uncle and one of my Cousins this weekend down in Port Charlotte. Paul took us to one of the spots he's had luck at before - El Jobean Fishing Pier on the Myakka River. My nephew Lucas also came and had a blast with Marlon and Noe (who gave themselves new names - Marlon = Magellan and Noe = Amelia; I don't have the full story on that just yet). Everyone took turns throwing the cast nets (Paul's was way bigger - 8' diameter; our's was a 3' diameter). We caught a number of Menhaden, but no luck on anything else. We did see a manatee swimming, and one of the other fishermen caught a catfish. Oh well - you win some, you lose some...

Fishing Report 6/21/2014, Part 4

We got back from the paddle and started crabbing shoreside again. The "not getting pinched" luck ran out. La even got into the crabbing action. Total score - 15 legal sized crabs landed; Noe got pinched once on her foot and twice on her hands (and the last one pissed her off so much she ended up pulling off the claw from the crab); I got pinched twice (this last picture was me getting pinched by the same crab that got Noe); and Marlon got pinched once.

Saturday Fishing with Friends in Maryland

After the show, we were going to take the kayak and SUPs out, but the weather didn't clear up until late in the afternoon. We did get a chance to go fishing and this was Marlon's first time fishing in brackish water. He caught a spot and a few sunfish. I caught a couple of sunfish and we saw a huge school of shad. As always - a great time had by all!

New Flies

I got a chance to tie up some flies today. Some electric chickens, several killer bugs, some egg flies and one chartreuse sabiki. The sabiki was killing it! Same cast of characters - bluegill of all sizes and some smallmouth bass. On one cast, I had hooked onto a pretty sizable bass - splashed up a bunch of water and threw the hook. Needless to say I'll be tying up more sabiki flies - I might even try to fish them on the Potomac and land some of the migrating shad. I am also going to get the kids their own fly rods - really short tenkara rods from tenkarabum.com - they are ready to catch on better equipment.

Off The Hook Extreme Catch

http://blogs.discovery.com/bites-animal-planet/2012/07/from-the-ring-to-the-rod-meet-off-the-hook-extreme-catches-eric-young.html#
This show rocks!!! It just started this week - I saw two episodes and I am HOOKED!!! Eric tries different techniques and different equipment (SUP and homemade raft so far - there are glimpses of jet skis and neck deep wading). If I were to be in a TV series, it'd be this!!! Photo credits to the Discovery Channel/Animal Planet folks.

Kids, Niece and Nephew Fishing

All caught on their own (minimal help from me).
