Shrimping

Noe and Marlon have sailed out of Kaneohe Yacht Club many times now.  Both of them have seen many fish and animals from the docks and this weekend was no exception.  Noe had pointed out to me several times that she has noticed some resident shrimp that live on the short wooden dock along the quay wall.  I suggested we catch some and and take a closer look.  I found a clear plastic cup and she went to work - catching the shrimp by hand.

She was able to show the other kids that were also sailing in the races.  And it started us both thinking about setting up the small saltwater cube aquarium again (but in a spot that wouldn't generate so much heat and algae blooms).

UH Manoa's ORE Program 50th Anniversary

This past Saturday evening, the Ocean and resources Engineering Program at UH Manoa celebrated it's 50th Anniversary at the Waikiki Aquarium. Of course I walked through the exhibits - not much has changed but the Hawaiian Fish Pond and the Opae Ula exhibits were not in the interior spaces (I didn't get to look on the outside - it got dark while I was looking around in the inside). The Giant Clam was still there nice and happy. The Hunters on the Reef exhibit was still there (and now I look at the Uluas with a whole different perspective) - these shark jaw pictures are for my future reference for id purposes. The ubiquitous jellyfish A pair of healthy Harlequin Shrimp A Scorpionfish Another Scorpionfish that mimics debris An "Asian" Arrowana The Tako Tank - I couldn't see if the Triton's Trumpet next to it was alive or not. An Urchin A Boxer Shrimp An Urchin with the Boxer Shrimp trying to box the spines. Must get rough living in confined quarters. And a picture of one of my Professors. It was a really good time reflecting on the past, checking out some cool exhibits, eating some food and looking to the future.

He'eia Fish Pond Weekends

Oops - I been swamped at work and haven't been out fishing, surfing, or doing anything amphibious. But I did go and volunteer some time at the Fish Pond helping out. Last Saturday I went to the Community Volunteer Day. We moved rocks, more rocks and some rocks. Then we got to start placing rocks. Way harder than it looks. Lots of constructive criticism - hopefully next time I can do a better job... Nonetheless, I couldn't stay for the after work session kalua pig - had to get to work. Today was the last of this year's Holo holo (predator eradication days). I got two papio to hand, lost a third and had a kaku staring at me the whole laughing at my lures. The catching slowed down towards noon so I started packing up. But not before taking a closer look at what all is really in the pond when the water is up. Crabs of all sorts and a species of shrimp (opa'e). I really enjoy helping out at the He'eia Fish Pond!

Caridina Shrimp

These guys are troopers -

They made the first trip out with me from Port Hueneme to Gulfport and not a one died. They spent a couple of weeks in a 5 gallon bucket waiting for the trip and then when we arrived, they spent another few weeks in a temporary tank.

Well - their wait is over - today they got back into their regular home.

In the last house, they lived in the loft (so neither kids had the benefit of having them exclusively in their room. Here, Marlon has them because his room is setup for it (his desk).

The kids are using a magnifying glass to check them out.

Four out of the 35 or so are carrying eggs so the colony looks to have expansion potential again.

If you don't remember from my very early posts, I started with 5, went down to 3 and at their peak numbers - upwards of 70. We had 3 die off when the filters didn't work while I was on travel. I don't anticipate traveling at all in the job so the shrimp should be good to go.

Glassing and Bee Shrimp

Here is the quad getting the bottom laminated. 2 x 4 oz matrixed with Resin Research epoxy. Not much work left on this one - the deck is also laminated, just hotcoating and final sanding. Maiden voyage may be as early as next weekend. More to follow...

And the picture that is not of me glassing the surfboard is of our red strained Bee Shrimp. These guys are supposed to be hard to breed in captivity, but for some reason I've been lucky. Started with 5, lost 2 and now have at least 20 running in the 7 gallon cube. I can watch these guys all day long!
