Night Blooming Water Lily

Check it out! Our lily was busy blooming last night!!! Neato!!!!

Aquatic Clothes

Some cool patterns we stumbled on - too bad they were for really young kids...

Plastic Plankton

I pulled this picture from a web article that discussed plankton poop. The article said studies on plankton show their feces have increased percentages of micro-plastics and this previous source of carbon isolation (heavier, non-plastic containing poop would sink faster) is not moving in the direction it should be. Because the lighter poop is staying suspended longer, it has a higher incidence of ending up higher in the food chain and eventually on to our plates. We should all strive to use less plastic, and ensure that what plastic is used/generated is not released into the ocean, otherwise we are doomed to eat our mistakes. And truthfully it is less 'us' and more our unborn future - if you don't take these steps for yourself, do take them for your great-great grandkids. When you surf, make sure to go and find some piece of plastic - a bag, a bottle, something - and grab it so it can be disposed of properly. Do something - because doing nothing is damning to future generations. Oh - here is the link to the article. http://us10.campaign-archive2.com/?u=1c4719a2f85d793ead2ffff65&id=74ed07f3a8&e=50f7e5cdfc

Dawn Patrolling the Short Weekend

I had class yesterday, so besides the Hawaii Ocean Expo, it was all work and no play. To make up for it, Marlon and I went on a dawn patrol this morning. He waxes boards well - he had a good teacher ;) He definitely has the bug - gets out on the water faster than a blink of the eye. And he likes drops!!! It makes me happy that Marlon likes surfing!!!

Dinner - 15 Years Later

After the expo, we went to grab some sushi. Some sushi from a place La and I first ate at over 15 years ago!!! We took this same picture when we were dating!!!! I'll update this post when I find the picture. The sushi is pretty good here. Oahu has always been special to La and I, and we can't be happier that we are able to live here again! Update - here's the original ;)

Hawaii Ocean Expo

We checked out the Hawaii Ocean Expo this evening. Similar grouping of booths and vendors as last year, but the organizers moved the venue down to Aloha Tower. Windward Boats was there teasing me... Naoki was there printing fresh tshirts for the keiki. La and Marlon were discussing Marine Biologist education and job paths with the education booths. And I had fun looking at all the fishing stuff - And eating a sample from a place I've been wanting to go to (they catch all the fish they serve) - what a job!!! Good way to spend a Saturday evening!

Wet Again -

Alright - I finally brought the family out to the fishing spot!!! I was able to catch a papio shortly after arriving. I then switched to helping the kids use their tenkara rods to try and catch the small sergeant majors. La had a great time snorkeling around, and when she wasn't snorkeling she was using the tako box like a boss ;) And La's quote of the day - "the best pieces of gear we have are these booties (tabi) and the tako boxes" Fun day on the flats!!!

Solar Impulse II

The Solar Impulse is making preps to takeoff for Phoenix. They had an open house for the public to see the plane up close. It is really cool that this is happening - when politics isn't involved in determining what can happen, wonderful things do -
