More Ahi for Dinner

We still had the cravings from the last batch while we were on Kauai, so I made another batch.

 

 I'm drooling on myself right now....

Catching Again - Hickam Flats

Marlon and I hit the flats this morning on the low negative tide.

 

 I ended up with three to hand - one po'opa'a and two papio.

 

 Marlon found this Medusa Worm (relative of the sea cucumber) - yeah it looks like poop but it is pretty efficient at picking up detritus.

 

Slow Smoked Pork Butt - Bone In This Time

I didn't notice that the last pork butt I bought had the bone in still. The cut was more compact and the meat came out more flavorful on the pork flavor side - the rub did not have as much effect (less surface area coverage). It still got in my belly!

Aloha Kauai -

We packed up, said our goodbyes and mahalos to Amy and headed East. The Shearwater birds were nesting and these were their protective hats -

 

 The chicks were 24 to 36" underground in a burrow dug by the parents.

 

Our last planned stop was the Hawaiiana shop in Hanapepe that we missed on Wednesday - we were going to only spend a few minutes and check out the other shops along the old Main Street - but we ended up talking with the shop keeper - Ted - for nearly 90 minutes!!! We talked about the fate of the Niihau Shell Leis, which beaches the old Japanese glass floats wash up on, where to go to find the best shells, where to take pictures of night rainbows and the Milky Way, and about living life well. He knows the western side of Kauai really well and shared a ton of information with us - we are definitely coming back and will likely end up spending most of our time in the southwestern - western side again!

Last Day - Ahi Poke and Sashimi for Brunch

Our duplex cabin neighbor gave us some ahi straps - time to make poke and sashimi. But we had to make a grocery run first because we didn't have sesame seed oil, good soy sauce, wasabi and a few other things (like a good knife). Ishihara's in Waimea had the sesame seed oil - and a really popular poke counter -

 

While La and I were out, we had a date chai (they call them "Dirty Chai's" - first time(s) I heard them called that).

Back at the cabin - I had to use a 'serrated knife' to clean and prepare the ahi - OH THE HUMANITY!!!!

 

 I made the most of it (but for sure I'm bringing my own filet knife next time), and everyone made quick work of my work!!! Yummy!!!

More Fishing!!!

After getting back, I went fishing and caught this Po'opa'a (Hawaiian Stocky Hawkfish) - this time on an orange plastic lure.

 

 The surf was a little too much to produce superb fishing conditions - but two to hand is better than none!!!! Noe was chasing ghost crabs and caught several.

 I emphasize WINDOW SHOPPING because this shop had tons of expensive polynesian art that I would have bought if money were no object... awesome pieces, but too expensive for my budget. And I think I can carve similar pieces... hmmmmmm....
