No Joke

These Bluegill can pull and bend a rod!!! This is my first bona fide long distance cast nailed freshwater fish. I shot the fly out to the lily pad cluster furthest out in the picture, slow stripped the fly and this guy materializes from below, studies the scud and takes it into his mouth - WHACK! I can't remember if I strip set or raised the rod to set the hook, but in either case it took off running. It didn't run like a 10 pound bone or a 5 pound trevally - but it did run enough that line management was a factor. Still - for only a few hundred footsteps away from the front door and lightweight tackle (I think the 5 wt I have is actually too much for these guys - maybe a 3 wt, but then again, I do hook up with some bass...), you can't beat it!
