Wing Foiling Session - 5/4/2023

In the car juggling act, I needed to pick up La and Noe this evening - they went sailing at RBM.  With that, I had the opportunity to wing at Hickam.

That also provided a good opportunity to try out the Triton X-1 wing foiling monofoil.

The wind was up and down, full of holes and kept bending towards the north.  The tide was super high as were the waves on the outside.

To get through the lulls on a foil I was not familar with, I opted for the RS5.1

Probably a bit much during the gusts, but it definitely worked great in the lower winds.

Even with the wind, my initial impression of the X1 is it wants to be powered up.  The following characteristics are not a surprise for a monofoil - does not have glide to get you through the lulls, it is very pitch unstable (but you get used to that quickly), and it wants to roll and yaw on its own.

When I took the T1 out on a strong wind day a while back, I was not able to hold my line.  With the X1 and less wind that the other day I'm referring to, I was able to hold and even pull up wind.

I did not take it outside - I wanted to make sure I got the feeling of down today.

I rigged while there was a lull - I could have probably been good with the SW2 4.7

Definitely a little more north than I prefer.

I'm surprised at the top speed achieved.  The foil did feel a lot more slippery going through the water compared to a conventional foil.

There will be good wind over the next several days!
