The New "Second Best" Ramen

I took the family to a ramen shop I've been wanting them to try on Friday evening - Goma Tei in the Ward Village complex. I got the Tan Tan Double The Shoyu was really good as well. In the spectrum of ramen shops we've been to, this is definitely up there. The shop we ate at in Hokkaido during the Snow Festival will always be ichiban, in fact that was the restaurant that changed our perspective of ramen - uplifting it from the memories of very inexpensive college food to gourmet fare. But - with that being an expensive and lengthy journey, I'll reset the number one spot to Daikokuya in Little Tokyo (LA). I can remember the soup base being so savory and the absolute perfection of the noodles. The char siu was melt in your mouth bliss... but alas - it is best not to lust for that which you cannot have (flying to LA for ramen might be in some folks budget, but not mine...). Another great ramen shop as chronicled in this very blog is Sakuramen in the NW District of Washington DC. But heck - that's even further than LA. That said, distance makes one appreciate the opportunity to seek out local options, and this being the Gathering Place, I would argue we have some of the best of everything. This ramen shop is just one of many, but it is setting the bar high early on in our exploration of modern day Ramen Shops of Hawaii. Stayed tuned...

Super Sized Aholehole

We were in town on Friday night. Saw this info wall in the Kakaako area. Described one of the fish typically taken for subsistence from simpler times. And the sequence shows the family clowns in a good mood (maybe because they just ate some damn good ramen - next post)!

Scoping Out the Competition

We went to the Arts and Crafts Fair at Hickam on Saturday to see what the vendors were selling. Primarily we wanted to see if anyone was selling amigarumi (sp?) - since the kiddoroosters pump those out relatively quickly. I figured it would be a good way for the kids to make some additional money so they can purchase the things they want (but La and I don't necessarily prioritize). We didn't see one vendor selling amigarumi. We did see a few selling pottery, succulents and air plants. Fun time checking out all the craftiness!!!

I feel some fly tying coming on...

It's been awhile since I've been fly fishing, but I haven't stopped looking at all the different flies out there. In fact, a lot of shoreline fishermen out here on Oahu actually use flies on whipping rigs and try to catch the same quarry a fly fisherman would target - just using spinning gear. I recently bought some weighted and unweighted heads to tie some papio flies, but I keep getting drawn back to the Orvis Website because of the names people assign to the flies they tie (and Orvis picks up as a distributor; I say Orvis Website because they are really good at marketing, but others do it as well). So besides the papio flies, these are some that I'll be trying to replicate in the near future - I'm thinking bonefish enticers instead of carp or big trout as these were originally conceived to catch. These are Martinez's Frankenstein Sculpin in tan and green This is a Mini Frankenstein Sculpin And my favorite name - the "Southern Culture on the Fly - Sick Little Monkey" I've come up with some cool names for flies I tie (if I may say so myself - just do a search on older posts on this blog that have to do with fly tying), but Sick Little Monkey has got to be one of my favorites. And I am a sucker for all things Southern (seeing as I grew up in Northern Florida and I speak fluent Redneck).

Sunday Hike to Shellandria

That's what we did today - hiked along the beach to find some shells. Charlie kept getting drawn closer to this mysterious device - Got some stainless hardware salvaged from it. Lots of bait hanging out in pukas... Nice beach day!!!

Fish Again.....

Yes - I had a slab of Atlantic Salmon in the fridge and had to cook it. Baked with butter, dill and seasoning.

All that Matters is I didn't get Skunked -

I hadn't been fishing in a while - so I tried my luck in an afternoon high tide. No papio, kaku, weke - just a lone lizardfish. But a fish is a fish and it isn't a skunk!

Repeat Lunch

I had bought an extra block of ahi so we had sashimi for a second time. I showed Marlon how to form the rice patties and how to cut the ahi. They came out pretty good!!! I'd say the kids thought so too!

I've been reading some books...

And paying attention to the sushi chefs when we've hit the sushi bars. Here's my latest attempt.

Lunch Break and Seeking Out the Assassin

La and the kiddoroosters were in town and free during lunchtime, so they picked me up and we went out to lunch!!! I took them to a spot I have been wanting to try out, but haven't had the time to get to - Ahi Assassins. Note the business hours - these guys go out on their off days and catch the fish they serve on the on days. Delicious food - well worth every penny Smart people work here and make wonderful food for savvy customers - and they get to go fishing as part of their job!!! Go check them out - near UH where Berentania St starts.

Walking Around Kailua and What Do I See???

More succulents that's what!!! I totally have succulents on the brain. My previous obsessions still perk my interest but succulents are literally everywhere you look. It is so much fun as they are way more prevalent than coral colonies, saltwater fish and energy transfer devices ever were - although all of those do have a sizable presence here in Hawaii, they are all still habitat or store driven. With succulents, just walk outside and BAM - there they are in your face. Then you can take mental notes on species, health, environmental conditions, and whether there are baby plants hanging around... You can even just take a step back and enjoy their unpretentious presence.

Other Stops Along the Way

One of the art galleries in the North SHore Marketplace was closing down and they had a sale going on. We didn't purchase anything, but they did have a bunch of really cool fish art. In honor of it being La's Birthday, and to pay homage to the fish sculptures that were on sale and we didn't buy, I was inspired to walk around the rest of the day with their expression. La was seriously impressed ;)
